Actually, at least to me (and I guess I have strange taste in wooden coasters), it's not so obvious that it's "junk". I rated the Texas Giant at my #2 wood coaster spot for a couple of years. In the early 90's, it almost (not quite) topped my long-standing #1 Mr. Twister. It was smooth and fast, intense and wild. I haven't ridden it in about 15 years but a friend of mine rode it a few years ago. He'd ridden it with me in the early 90's, and he felt it was well-cared for. So we're sad that this is happening, and we have no intention of ever returning to SFOT. I do realize we're not breaking the bank for 6 Flags, but it feels somewhat satisfying to us to boycott the place.
That is just my opinion.
More important, SOB, in my opinion, was always poor. Yes, the loop was smooth. But the ride was never comfortable, even in its premiere year. Worse, it just didn't do too much for such a long track. How can you design a coaster with over 7000 feet of track that does so few elements?
What was frustrating to me is that rumors indicated Paramount was about to build 5 copies of the Rye Aeroplane Coaster and decided instead to sink all of that money into SOB. What a waste, if true.
