WTF? This is possibly the worst thing anyone could do. Ever.

Edit: Christopher Hitchens is awesome BTW.

I'm an american, and if my freedom of speech is going to be censored they ill fight for it. Its not so much that im against that they want some type respect for their religion but they want to control what we say at all. It starts here, next we move on to christanity, then the president, and before we know it we will be introuble by the law for saying a statement like "i disagree with soda". Its gonna get out of control fast. Also, they dont want us to say anything bad about them but everyone else talks garbage about eachother, its part of life. I dont care who says what, they probably say stuff about us, we say stuff about them, oh well get over it. Bunch of babies.

I paused it straight after 'crime to criticized religion'. Are you love kidding me? I don't think I even needed to hear an more.

By the way...
How many Muslims are in America?
I bet the number is like, 1/10th of what we have here.
Consider yourself lucky. Islam will probably have a few seats in our parliament in under a decade if they aren't running the country entirely by then.

now now, I wouldn't say it is ALWAYS the cause of the world's problems, although I am nearly positive that world hunger would be gone if missionaries stopped wasting everyone time by preaching and actually helped people.

This is stupid.

BTW anyone who says Islam - the actual religion - is screwed up is definitely basing their feeling on the twisted Islam that the extremists use to spread their own agendas. Its a lot like extreme Christians that do all sorts of stupid and idiotic stuff and claim its "Christian" when in reality its far too perverted to even be considered Christian. The same goes for Islam or ANY other religion for that matter. Heck, you dont even have to go with religion to find people who are extreme in beliefs, what about politics?

Anyways, positively stupid idea. I don't care if you make fun of what I believe, thats the least of my worries. It wouldn't affect me because I'm not walking around trying to prove someone that what they believe is rubbish either.

I'm anti religion. Religion gets too out of hand. I mean if you need to have a war which will kill hudreds of thousands or more humans over what your coutry thinks is gonna happen after you die, its a bit extreme. They say humans are more advanced than any other creature on this earth but i disagree, we are the only creatures who cant coexist withen their own species. And then we need to kill everything/everyone else to prove we are right and this is just another exapmle.

This is the only part of your post that I actually agree with.

BTW anyone who says Islam - the actual religion - is screwed up is definitely basing their feeling on the twisted Islam that the extremists use to spread their own agendas.

Muslim extremists are actually more accurately described as fundamentalists. They are the ones who actually follow the literal word of the Koran and are therefore the most knowledgeable of both their holy book and their religion. They are therefore the people we SHOULD refer to when we refer to true Muslims.

Its a lot like extreme Christians that do all sorts of stupid and idiotic stuff and claim its "Christian" when in reality its far too perverted to even be considered Christian.

Again, these are the people that have more knowledge of the bible and take it's word more seriously than anyone else. Their actions reflect the bible, and thus "true" Christianity. I am open to any other definition of true you are able to come up with, but this is the only one I can think up.

The same goes for Islam or ANY other religion for that matter.

Agreed, but with the addition of what I responded to the previous 2 segments.

Heck, you don't even have to go with religion to find people who are extreme in beliefs, what about politics?

I agree there are extremists in politics, however, their ideas are widely considered to be OK to be questioned, and criticized in an open forum. However, the second you even question a religious fundamentalists beliefs, everyone immediately jumps on you as a bigot, or calls you close minded, no matter how logical your points may be.

Without getting too religious and keeping this on track, fundamentalists in any religion typically take a great majority of their beliefs out of context.

Fundamentalists can also be called zealots and at least in the one holy book I've read, they almost always misinterpreted and thus misrepresented the proper meaning.

Just like I grew up knowing a whole family of practicing Muslims and they took the time in some awesome conversations to outline where these whacko fundamentalists were wrong. Just like I could do the same for these so called christians that bomb abortion clinics or the westboro baptist church nutjobs that boycot funerals of dead soldiers.

Just because someone follows something word for word does not mean they are interpreting as it was intended. In almost every instance, they indeed miss important points and take things out of context.

So the question I will shift to in this topic is, the Muslim nations that are pushing this, I wonder if this is something that the fundamentalists are pushing the governments to do or is it a tactic to try and avoid pissing off the fundamentalists. Either way, I think the answer is irrelevant. Theyll still find reasons to push their agenda and thats about all there is to it.

I saw this a few months ago. If it was ever enforced there'd be war in any country with enough people with half a brain who'd know well enough to stand up for their basic rights. (Or die trying to.)

Hitchens is currently battling esophageal cancer mostly from smoking. Naturally, the evangelicals and such all say the same thing; "We'll be praying for you." Hitchens did say that if he ever converted, it would be out of mental instability from the pain, which I think is a bit odd for him to say. (In other words, it's hard to imagine him ever considering the possibility of turning to a god, who if exists, was the one who invented/caused [directly or indirectly for whatever "divine" reason] said cancer.)

Most major religions have a plethora of interpretations and denominations all of which claim to be the one true believers; the true christians, the true muslims, etc. Muslims who are actually peaceful usually claim that the extremists are taking the Quran out of context, while the extremists claim that the moderates are "just as bad" as non Muslims, apostates, etc. (After all, Muslims were amongst those killed during 9/11.)

Muslim extremists/fundamentalists are by far the worst but it's possible that a few also have political motivations. (Though killing the Dutch filmmaker was NOT political at all.) Of course, many Christian denominations, groups, and people are pretty bad but I don't think they're as dangerous.

The point is, back to the other paragraph, that so many groups claim to know the one truth above others. How do you know which group truly represents what their ancient text intended? By the group who's most friendly and least hypocritical/egotistic/etc. or the group who actually follows their 2000 year old text more closely? I think that if something isn't true and demands believe, conformity, and/or blind faith and obedience from its people, it is a bad force for the world, period.

Nevermind that though, as people are entitled to such beliefs and I used to believe such things as well. The main issue right here is how these beliefs are affecting the world and how they have impeded progress from science, ethics, government, freedom, and so many other such things for so long. What it's continuing to do today is pretty bad and everyone (regardless of what they believe) needs to stand up against them. Otherwise they will passively subject themselves to the evils being done by such fundamentalists or help cause it.

I think we're growing out of it though. As mentioned earlier, passing such a law like an anti-blasphemy law will result in protest. Enforcing such a law will likely lead to people standing up for their rights.
