A couple of people I know are trying to get some data on their main problem when teaching lab, which is that around 1/3 of the students don't know how to read a ruler (in college, yes Europeans I'm being serious).

So if you're an American and under 18 people vote in this poll just to see with the world's shittiest data set if it's an Illinois problem or nationwide problem.

We've discovered the term "straight-edge" makes people think they're only for drawing straight lines, but this may be a Chicago area only thing since the state is catastrophically broke.

Are you talking about the 16 (standard) scale? Still not hard, you just have to know [simple] fractions. It was sad, I had to help people measure. Not as bad as college like CK talked about though- these were HS seniors. :/

Are you a crack baby Jcoasters?

I mean really I'm practically a decade older than you and my parents had me in their 40's (that's a late age to have kids. I need to tell you this since you're too stupid to know that). She has grey hair and puts up with incredible verbal abuse daily just for medical insurance (should be retired in a couple years :D). Do you really, truly, and honestly want to go there?

I may find them really goddamned annoying, but if you're going to bring my parents into this for no reason I will love stomp you without needing to bring up your pill fascination.

So then you can explain how it's so much easier, simpler, and more "acurate".

Its all based on tens. For example, the bass length unit is the meter. Then you have the decimeter which is one tenth on a meter, the centimeter that is 1 one hundredth of a meter, and so on. you just add or subtract zeros. Another example, a kilo meter is 1,000 meters. the prefix kilo means one-thousand.

accuracy:

In 1670, Gabriel Mouton, a French abbot and scientist, proposed a decimal system of measurement based on the circumference of the Earth. His suggestion was a unit, milliare, that was defined as a minute of arc along a meridian. He then suggested a system of sub-units, dividing successively by factors of ten into the centuria, decuria, virga, virgula, decima, centesima, and millesima.

It is based on the circumference of the earth, unlike the imperial system which is based on an English guys foot.

Failed to explain how a meter is more accurate than a yard.

Ok it it's length is relative to the earth while a yard is 3 English guy's feet. While it is not more accurate because i ti sall langth and there is no correct term for a space of length, I personally think it is more accurate in the sense that it is based around the earth like I have stated.

And seriously Mathew, why do you have to challenge me? I pretty much think you just want to pick a fight because you have noting better to do. And seriously, why do you care? Grow up and find something better to occupy your time instead of picking fights with 13 year old boys who live across the country and whom you have never met.
