Thats the USGS map of the area. As you can see Japan just suffered a 5.0 aftershock.

(Red - Happened within the last hour or so.
Blue - Happened within the last day or so.
Yellow - Happened within the last week.)

So I just thought about this... I wonder if any of the jet coasters were damaged during the quake?

Ok,I just got up and my dad said to me that the Reactor in Fokushima will probably have a meltdown. The only thing that prevents that is the reactor shell and its unknown if it was damaged from an explosion some hours ago.Radioactiv cesium was found outside of Fokushima. This could probably end up in a second Chernobyl. They evacuated the area 10 km around the reactor and distribute Iodine tablets.
I`m not a very religious person, but all my prays to japan.
All RCCAs should be RMC'd. And that event shall be henceforth known as the Rollercaust.

^ It seems that is correct according to CNN. http://news.blogs.cnn.com/2011/03/12/ja ... struction/

There has also been one fatality in California related to this event as well as about 10 million dollars in damages in the Santa Cruz harbor.

They're venting gas from one of 3 operating reactors at the time because they want to avoid a high pressure situation, but trying to compare this to an all out catastrophic steam explosion (I don't know if Chernobyl counts officially as a meltdown). Chernobyl was pieces of the reactor itself ejected up into the air and into the basement (the lid of the container flew 100s of feet into the air through the ceiling). It's really an apples to oranges situation currently.

This is nowhere near anything like Chernobyl, which was a combination of poor reactor design, maintenance, construction, a lack of a containment building, and poor operation (they were running an experiment when it happened). Evacuating people because you're not stupid and being cautious is different than evacuating people because you have to.

Maybe Sauron could verify this since I don't really understand the literature and he is more likely to, but I believe the Chernobyl style reactors (RMBK?) had something like a quasi-parabola of stability where an extremely high OR an extremely low power output would heat it up insanely.

If anyone cares it has been upgraded to a 9.0 now as more data has been processed.

That doesn't make me feel any better, as I is I feel terrible for the Japanese people. No one should have to go through a tragedy of this magnitude, No matter where I am I'm trying to keep tabs on whats happening at the reactors, if japans economy goes, half of the worlds economy goes.

Japan is overall stable. Sendai is a major city and this is a major event but overall, the impacts of this are nowhere near as bad as they could have been. In regards to our topic (our site), yes, at least four parks were closed. Two should re-open tomorrow (Disney) and the two in Sendai are TBA. I think the good news there lies that those parks were not open at the time otherwise this would have been much much worse. At least on of Sandai's amusement parks was hit by the tsunami. Could you imagine being there when that would happen?

So yes, this was a major event, but Japan is strong. She and her people will pick up their lives and move on. This shows however that the "Ring of Fire" is still very active and this may trigger other events in the next few weeks. Granted you can't predict when an earthquake will strike, you can try to, and from what I have heard, Cali is up for a major earthquake anytime now.

My mistake, Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea will be closed for at least 10 days.

Oh my god... *major facepalm*...
Conspiracy theorists are having a major field day over this saying the tsunami was created buy our government to pay back Japan (even more than having dropped two atomic bombs on them) for Pearl Harbor.
Just ...wow... [shocked]

Are you talking about HAARP?

Because that particular theory has been around for a while.

Adding to that, the 3rd reactor their has also had its cooling system fail.

EDIT:

Japan's scale is rating this as a 9, while the USGS is rating it as an 8.9, others are rating it anywhere from 8.7 through 9.2.

There are several different scales. Richter, Moment Magnitude, etc.

I've been told the richter scale is calibrated for southern California and really shouldn't be used elsewhere, but I don't study earthquakes or anything at all like that.

EDIT: Wikipedia says (to be taken with a grain of salt) it's 8.9-9.0 on the moment magnitude scale, so they're probably still working on calculating it exactly.

Now Reactor #3 has blown and the fourth (last one at the plant) is reportedly on fire.

Japan's meteorological agency reported one good sign. It said the prevailing wind in the area of the stricken plant was heading east into the Pacific, which would help carry away any radiation.

Say what? Good sign? WTF! East = USA! With California being one of the first states to get it. I don't want radiation coming here! /me turns on my ventilator pointed west to send it back to Japan?
