Have the reactors gone Chernobyl? Because this interests me.

3 explosions did occur in one of the reactors... Radiation was felt by one of our ships over there that is as much as 100 miles out at sea. But I wouldn't quite call it Chernobyl yet. I read that due to the wind currents, if more radioactive material blows up its likely its headed for the U.S. West Coast over a few years though, which could cause Cancer and birth defects. :L

Conspiracy theorists are having a major field day over this saying the tsunami was created buy our government to pay back Japan (even more than having dropped two atomic bombs on them) for Pearl Harbor.
Just ...wow... [shocked]

Are you talking about HAARP?

Because that particular theory has been around for a while.

I don't believe we have the capability of creating such a forceful event on demand. The amount of pressure required in moving a tectonic plate surpasses all the technological capabilities that exist on earth today.

I have no doubt that people can trigger an earthquake as I live and on top of a maze of gold mines that causes little tremors as they destabilize natural fault lines. But these lines are there and would have moved one way or the other. For a wall of water of that magnitude to occur the plate needed to have physically lifted or dropped by a couple of meters which is a gigantic piece of landmass, not to mention the water pressure that keeps it in place as well. IOW trigger, not create.

A brief overview of what I'm suggesting is that even if you place a hydrogen bomb on that fault it wouldn't shift the why it needs too and if it does, it was definitely on the brink of shifting within a couple of days anyways. But this is just my theory.

No and it is extremity doubtful that they will go that far. At this point, it seems that they are pumping in sea water which will in effect "destroy" the fuel rods and the plant will no longer be operational.

Officially, it's on level 6, so it's severity is between Chernobyl and Three Mile Island.

The only reason I can think they'd flood it for is to cool the reaction down which in turn would slow the reaction down. Anyway, I'm gonna keep reading on this news.

^My understanding is that the reactors are "shut down". The problem is, even with no fission taking place, the reactors still are at about 7% of their full power, thanks to decay heat created by the short-lived fission byproducts. Without a functioning cooling system, this is still enough to cause serious problems.

Hi. One of the things making the inside of the earth really love hot is said radioactive decay heat that Kennywood mentioned which is why "shut down" isn't like an instantaneously on and off switch.

Reactor 3 at the Fukushima plant, the one with plutonium in it, just started to leak some sort of smoke.

The US government says that anyone within a 50 mile radius of the Fukushima plant should evacuate.

Was talking to my physics teacher about the nuclear plant. He said that the media have been reporting really poorly especially related to radiation.

Gamma radiation (which is relatively harmless, since your constantly exposed to Gamma from the sun...) could well get there.
Alpha radiation wont. Beta might, Not sure the longest distance they can travel.

Has Home Depot started selling Doomsday Shelters yet? Like californians need another reason to get all panicky. I just read todays coverage on Yahoo and luckily, for now, there is no mention of the radiation clouds impacting the US, unfortunately, it seems the situation over there is getting worse instead of better. My thoughts go out to all those affected by the series of events that have recently plagued the western pacific rim.

Chinese have taken the proactive step in consuming iodized salt in order to protect themselves from the radiation. Stores have ran out of salt and they are eating it as if it was candy! I am serious!

Now lets get some facts. Eating iodized salt will NOT protect you from radiation. So, you are more likely to die from hypertension from eating all that salt.

Just an FYI the EPA is hiring a few people for temporary positions to sample the poop out of places to test for radiation according a newsletter as of yesterday.

^ LOL! Anyway, I just read an article from AP on Yahoo news saying that there may be some kind of breach in one of the cores at the plant. Geesh, these guys just cannot catch a break. I hope that they are able to get things cleaned up and fixed soon. As sad as it is, we (human beings) have no one to blame but ourselves for these kind of tragedies.

considering volcanoes are part of plate movement, it makes sense.
