Diesel is overrated. I drive a 3.6litre Turbo Diesel van at work, and it is a beast. Seriously, a beast. But it's not as fuel efficient as you might think, given the cost difference in the fuel type. AND, all of the power comes in huge bulges, rather than smoothly increasing, based on how much pressure you apply on the pedal.
I understand that my van has a 3.6litre turbo engine, but still, the averagves less than 20mpg, which is poor to say the least.
Compared to my car which is petrol (which again I understand is only a 1.3litre, so huge engine size difference), averages about 60mpg, but will do 70mpg if I'm not being a dick.
Also, diesel engines sound like absolute poop
