Maybe because the only thing slowing it down is the cushion of air? I know how its engineered but compared to other amusement rides, IMO its far more intimidating than anything else. Even bungie or those SCAD towers.

It looks like an elevator that just runs into the sky and then lets you fall to you death.

Also keep in mind it's something like 440ft high.

Actually, if you scaled it up, that might be a neat ride: a drop tower that shakes you around and stuff...

If you scaled it up, you would have Tower of Terror at Disneys Hollywood Studios. Absolutely not kidding. Theyve made what was once one of the best drop rides ever into a large Frog Hopper.

Just for the sake of trying to keep at least one thread semi-civil; you are both right.

I'd say that the scariest are the ones that are least safe. (As in, actual, real safety, not perceived safety or illusion of danger.)

But don't most S&S drop towers rely on the cushion of air? The only difference here is that in the S&S ones the air is compacted in long cylinders whereas on this one it looks like its the carriage that compresses the air underneath.

Huh Real? I rode ToT at DHS a few times this year and it was fantastic. Amazing airtime on the transitions from up to down and you're out of your seat the entire ride...seat belts only too is awesome.

When I rode in 2008 it was fun but not great as a drop tower...pretty similar to an S&S tower to me, except each hop had a pop of air vs. the one pop on S&S towers. Good air for a half second, then controlled descent until the pullout. The best part though was not knowing when you'd stop or drop, and the varied cycles. My first two rides I think we started going up, so then I was waiting for that on the third and we dropped first, which was pretty sweet.

I know it's not a "Ride", but the scariest thing I've been on is the Cliff Jump at Mountain Creek Water Park.

Why is that scary? It's just a high dive themed to look like a cliff, no? If it's a real cliff, it might as well just be a high dive themed to look like a cliff.

I think the scariest thrill rides are the traveling rides. Just the thought that it was put up in less than a week and is taken down just as quick, is enough to scare the crap out of me. Not to mention this is done multiple times a year to the same ride. I can just imagine someone saying just after the erected the ride, "hey, what's this extra bolt for?"

I like when one side of the whole ride is on 3 crooked bricks stacked up in a little tower.

Exactly! Ray Cammack Shows is notorious for that, and warped and cracked 2x4's.

See, the difficulty is that they run a new program (and widely advertise the new programs) almost every year, sometimes more often than that. When I rode the first year it was open it had 2 full drops. Since the ride does NOT FREEFALL and is actually pulled down at something like -0.8 G.s They went into detail showing how the ride is pulled down via these huge winches.

So yea, while you get all these pops of air, the original setup was 2, 170ft plunges at nearly twice the speed of just falling. That, to me, was infinitely more thrilling than all the pops of air. Its like going to ride Drop Zone (well, half of it) but being pulled down instead of dropped and then yanked up one more time and yanked down again.

I didnt care for the adult frog hopper programs theyve been running since a few years after the initial program. It was said from Disney the new program, in more words, was basically less scary than the original. And they were right. Ridership went up after that.

Incorrect. There is only one Hollywood Studios. Use RCDB if you need verification. In the US, these are the current names of Disney Parks:

Disneyland
Disney's California Adventure

Disney's Magic Kingdom
Disney's Animal Kingdom
Disney's Epcot
Disney's Hollywood Studios

I'm excluding the water parks there obviously.

Maybe you are thinking of Universal Studios Hollywood? I hope not! LOL
