Photo of an iceberg from Svalbard (island group north of Scandanavia) courtesy of my adviser. He took them this summer in his little dingy while on a two month science expedition. I apologize for the obnoxiously huge filesize but I think it's worth it. This little guy calved off underwater and then shot up to the surface. Thought some people would appreciate it.

That aside, awesome image. How do patterns like this form in ice? Is it trapped air? Or is it the way the ocean wears the ice away? Would be interesting to look at how this forms.

That does look damn awesome. The bubbly imprinted effect is grand.

There is an underwater river under the glacier that ejects into the ocean in that fjord. The bubbly bits are associated with quiet water, and the lineations are from the water rising after it's ejected from the bottom. Freshwater is less dense than the ocean water so it rises and cuts those lineations. The bubbly parts are a physics clusterfuck that I'm not going to pretend to know and I'm glad I don't deal with that aspect but they are associated with quiet water.

This isn't 100% certain because data is lacking because you can't directly observe this due to the inherent danger of it and because remotely operated vehicles can't see through all of the mud and sand being ejected down there.

Also the inherent danger of having that mammoth block (if I didn't mention it it's near the efflux of the underwater river) of ice suddenly jump out of the ocean with great rising force under your boat can make one aware of one's...insignificance. Dark stuff in the berg is "frozen dirt" as Gazag would say lol
