Thanks to the fact that a million years ago one of the mods here changed my user title to this because I'm an Apple fan, this will seem ironic, but here goes nothing...

Steve jobs changed the world, he was a visionary and nobody will ever do what he did. Technology works for us now, we don't work technology, and without him tech as we know it wouldn't be what it is today.

First, I dont see Steve Jobs as changing the world. He may have claimed the iPod changed the music industry but the MP3!! Changed the music industry. Not the iPod. The iPod only gave you a way to carry that digital medium which is the REAL reason for the iPod. iPod was just the one everyone wanted because Apple convinced us it was the best thing ever (and it wasnt...I had one - one of the early ones)

Bill Gates changed more tech wise than Steve Jobs. Steve couldnt get his "windowed" idea off the ground and thats what Gates did. Thats the very beginning and the fact that Gates did such a great job with it is the reason the tech world exploded.


What you CAN credit Jobs with is being a visionary in MOBILE devices. Their computers havent pushed forth any real envelopes and nor have they innovated. Mobile devices? Lets not even try to compare anyone to Apple. Even though their iPhone only takes up 5% of all phones in the world, when you combine those with the iPad, iPod and all the other mobile devices its a testament to Steve Jobs and how he saw the Mobile Platform and jumped on it.

His vision with that combined with Apples Media Machine (Seriously, they could sell sand to someone in the middle east) and you have arguably the most well known mobile device brand EVER. Kudos to him there.



But I do not and will not ever see the reason for the way he is worshipped. He piggybacked off several other ideas (Like Gates did with him) but he could do it so much better than anyone else.


It is a sad loss, he probably still had great ideas (Except that iMat thing...).My condolences to his family and friends.

I'm not trying to troll his death or anything since he was relatively young for where he was raised and it was quite untimely, I just don't really see a reason to care that much consider many more people who achieved more die all the time and nobody cares because they're too busy buying DRM riddled poop for their iWhatever while bumbling into traffic with white headphones on unaware of the world around them.

If anything he proved the power of marketing's ability to fool people into buy crap.

Changing the world with an invention is creating the first toilet, telegraph, harnessing electricity, etc. Selling a product you didn't even invent that is a combination of existing technologies all while getting repeatedly sued for patent infringement and manufacturing devices in a factory that installed suicide nets is not changing the world.

And also, his inventions only what, 1% of the worlds population can afford to buy and enjoy? Like CK said, not exactly trying to troll but Ive heard he was quite stingy with his money and his impact on the world only affected a very small percentile of the world as we know it.

I know this seems like a direct comparison and its not meant to be, but Bill Gates has given a vast amount of his fortune to helping the world in its worst places, where they need it most. Hes just one of many who despite their fortunes, seem to rather give it back than to hoard it.


He helped the mobile media world far as I see it. Personal Computing he basically took what Xerox had created it, copied and packaged into the first Apple computers. No big deal, that's business. But even his computers didn't shape the modern world quite like Microsoft did.

Bill Gates also knows/acknowledges he's a nerd and doesn't try to hide it with the fake charisma bullshit that Steve did, that just comes off as awkward and pretensions. I think that's what I hated most about Apple/Jobs.

I also don't think that Apple's products are as innovative as they want you to think. They may have been the first of their kind with mainstream success (iPod, iPhone) but not the first of their kind outright (Cowan iAudio, Blackberry). They know how to market other company's innovations.

Yeah it's sad he died young......but I have little respect for his company and what he showed in his public life.

I'm not an Apple user, so I'm not going to get in on the innovation debate. However, there is something that I REALLY must give Steve Jobs credit for... buying Pixar in 1986 when they were about to go bankrupt. He saw their potential, and without his investment it is likely that my favorite film company in the world right now would never have gotten to make a feature-length film. "WALL-E," "Up," "Ratatouille," and "The Incredibles" are among my favorite movies of all time, and it's unimaginable to think what state American animation would be in right now if it weren't for the influence of Pixar. So for that at least, I really have to give Steve Jobs credit.

I agree there, Pixar is great.

I can think of many people who have genuinely changed the way we live our lives and Steve Jobs is not one of the names that come to mind. I wonder if there will be as much fuss when tim berners-lee dies? And if you have to search the internet to find out who tim berners-lee is, then thank you for proving my point.

To be fair he did use a NeXT computer to set up the web server... But I agree with the point you're making. Jobs was a visionary in the field of creating mass marketable high tech devices, and did change how the public view computers and mobile devices, but he is certainly not one of the worlds "Most influential people".

Steve Jobs always struck me as being a rude asshole, in my opinion. That being said, I will say this about him:

1) The world economy might be in much better shape if we had more CEOs like him. He didn't just run a company. He actually lived and breathed Apple as if it were a part of him.

2) I have no interest in owning a Mac, and I likely never will. But iOS products are another story. As Real mentioned somewhere above in this thread, iOS is where Apple has truly succeeded and continue to succeed. I now own an iphone 4, ipad 2, and Apple TV 2... even though I once swore I would never ever purchase an Apple product. You often hear Apple fanboys parroting a Steve Jobs quote of "it just works". I have to admit that this quote is true most of the time. Pretty much everything works without the user having to do anything. Airplay is a good example of this. I recently bought the Apple TV box for my home entertainment system, and was pleasantly surprised to find a new button in my iphone youtube app later on that day. When I pushed the button, the youtube video I was watching on my phone immediately started playing on my tv. Not only did I not do any sort of special set up to make this happen (aside from taking the ATV box out of its packaging and plugging it in), but I also didn't even realize that it was an available feature for the ATV. People without many technical skills eat this kind of poop up, which is exactly why Apple has been so successful with their mobile OS devices. Everything I've ever read about Steve Jobs has stated that he seriously pushed for this type of 'no user input required' designs. For that, I give him credit. Asshole or not.
