"Party Like it's 1989!" Contest

The Story:
It's time to travel back in time. The year? 1989. The place? Cedar Point. You ready? Okay, here we go...

(whooshing sounds and Twilight-Zone music...)

Welcome to 1989! Ronald Reagan has just turned over his presidency to that new fresh-faced upstart George H.W. Bush. Eastern Europe is still under Soviet control. People everywhere are worried about kids who stay inside all day playing those newfangled Nintendo video games Zelda 2 and Super Mario Bros. 2. The popular musical spark which was provided by MTV and New-Wave bands at the start of the decade has long since faded into a plethora of boring synthed soft-rock cheese. Teenage girls everywhere are screaming for New Kids on the Block, while the pop charts are dominated by Paula Abdul, Milli Vanilli, and Madonna.

In the coaster world, the biggest news is Arrow Dynamics and their massive steel looping coasters. Curtis Summers and Charlie Dinn are starting a major wood coaster revival with the likes of "Raging Wolf Bobs" and "Wolverine Wildcat," and a few more coasters will be built by legendary designer Anton Schwarzkoph before he retires. Bolliger & Mabillard coasters do not even exist yet. Intamin has only built two major coasters, "Flashback" and "American Eagle." The Vekoma SLC also does not exist yet. CCI and GCI? Who are they? And the tallest and fastest roller coaster in the world is Six Flags Great Adventure's "Great American Scream Machine" at an amazingly huge 173 feet! (To think... just a decade before now, the tallest coaster in the world was Gemini. We've gone up a whole 50 feet in the last 10 years!)

And with that said, it's time for you to assume the role of the world's foremost coaster designer of 1989, Arrow Dynamics' own Ron Toomer.

Cedar Point, a large amusement park on the shores of Lake Erie, contains an amazing total of eight roller coasters, including two which are world-famous, (both of which you designed): Gemini, which was the world's tallest and fastest coaster 10 years ago, and Corkscrew, the world's first coaster to go upside-down three times. But both of those coasters were built in the 1970's. So Cedar Point wants you to build them another legendary coaster... a coaster to top all coasters... the world's first roller coaster to break the 200-foot height barrier!

It is your job to create the world's very first hypercoaster... a type of coaster that does not even exist yet, nor was ever imagined before.

PRIZES:
1st Place: Contest Medal, 10,000 pts
2nd Place: 5,000 pts
3rd Place: 2,500 pts

DOWNLOAD THE TEMPLATE HERE:
http://www.coastercrazy.com/track_exchange/detail/18518

This template area is a replica of Cedar Point in 1988. The above satellite photo is of the same template area, for reference, just to show you that this really is the same place and was scaled exactly. Notice how much has changed in 22 years. In 1988, Soak City had just opened, and was confined to the 10-slide complex on the right. Sandcastle Suites did not exist yet. Challenge Park did not exist yet. Camper Village was twice the size that it is now, but management was planning on shutting down the right half of it anyway for building space, so that whole mid-template area is open for building!

THE RULES:

Yet again, everyone, it's up to you to build the world's very first roller coaster over 200 feet tall. Such an amazing feat has never been accomplished before in the history of the world, so it's up to you, the lead designer at Arrow Dynamics, to decide what to do with all of that height and speed. Remember, the hypercoaster does not even exist yet. So you can make the hypercoaster exactly how YOU want to make it. Who says that hypercoasters have to be out-and-backs, or be all about airtime, or not have inversions? They don't exist yet. It's completely up to you to be at the helm of this great moment in coaster history. Cedar Point really doesn't have budget concerns either, so the only real limitations are that it has to fit in the contest area, has to be over 200 feet tall, and must be an Arrow Dynamics coaster. Let your creativity run wild, and have fun!

    TEMPLATE RESTRICTIONS:
  • Blue lines: do not cross them with either track or supports. (Soak City, Lake Erie, and Gemini.)
  • Purple lines: track and supports may cross them, but everything in these areas must be at least 13 feet above ground, and no footers are allowed in these areas. (These represent paths, roads, parking lots, and the part of Camper Village that CP wants to keep.)
  • The coaster's station must be contained completely below Perimeter Parkway, the purple road area that runs diagonally in the bottom-right.
  • Light red line: this is boundary of the beach. You are welcome to build between it and the water, although park management would generally prefer that this be done as little as possible.
  • Dark red line: this is the track layout of the real Magnum X-L 200. It is just there as a reference. Do what you want with it.

  • GENERAL RULES:
  • Track Style must be Corkscrew Coaster (and don't forget the classic coathanger transitions! [:D])
  • Height must be at least 200 feet (relative to the ground) [61m]
  • Must be a full-circuit track (no shuttle coasters)
  • No propulsion method of any type aside from chain lifts and gravity are allowed. (Remember, it's 1989. The only launched coasters in existence right now are shuttle loops. Plus, Arrow doesn't use friction wheels.)
  • No underground tunnels are allowed. Only above-ground ones. (the water table at CP is too high.)
  • All tracks must be submitted by 11:59:59pm CCST Monday, October 24
  • Completed tracks must be posted on the exchange. Please also post a link to the track in this topic, and add a [1989 Contest] tag to the end of the coaster's name so that we can all find it.
  • No re-submissions are allowed

JUDGMENT:
This contest will be unique in that it will not be judged by a single person. It will be judged by everyone who submits a track. At the end of the contest, all those who participated will be asked to rank the other members' entries, and the coaster with the highest average vote will win. If you don't submit a ranking in time, you and your track will both be disqualified.

Official CJD-style extremely-long-winded contest ratings will also be provided to all who submit a track, but they will not determine the actual outcome of the contest.

HAVE FUN, AND GOOD LUCK!

Questions & Answers

If you have any questions you can post them in this topic. I will try to answer your question A.S.A.P. Your question and the answer will be posted under this header.

Q: Does the no transport tires rule apply to the station and brakes as well?
A: Yes, it does apply to them as well. Basically, you'll have to angle them downward slightly and use gravity. That's how Arrow does it.

Q: The rule about ranking everyone elses coasters, that does not include your own ride right? Because naturally everyone will put their ride as number 1.
A: Correct, for that exact reason.

This sounds awsome, I've just been recently researching his rides to help with my looper design so I'll definitly join, I just can't promise I'll finish in time due to the rigorous schedule of an architecture student, but I'm definitly joining and will try
What are these for?

Yes. Only gravity is allowed. Just angle the brakes/station a few degrees down, and you won't have any problems. That's how Arrow does it.

Oh yeah, and by the way, I'm going to be competing in this one also, right alongside all of you. Since the judgment is by popular vote rather than ratings, it doesn't matter in the slightest that I'm also running the contest.
