A meme is essentially an inside joke or joke with a continuous running theme that is used over and over again. They're extremely funny when used in context on the internet sites they are intended for and with the losers like me on those sites who are sad enough to know them all. To use them out of context as we see here, is quite pathetic. (Essentially what I'm saying is: OP is a fag)

Yeah, GerstlCrazy, they are basically jokes that pertain to a "character". It's the same reason why shows like The Office, Parks and Rec, and other shows like it are funny. Basically, you learn what the picture is (in the case above, "foul bachelor frog") and what character it relates to. Whenever you read the caption, it's funny because it pertains to the character. Usually memes get funnier as you read more of them and get a better picture of the "character".

It's like if you friend did/said something and you thought "that's totally something he would do/say" and you think it's funny. The funniest memes are the ones that you can relate to, or that you've seen happen before.

Some memes are just ones that are funny pictures that don't pertain to a series, like the "Deal With It" picture that I see around here.

But yeah, that's the best way I can explain it.
