Has anyone made a perfect corkscrew in Newton 2. I am tring to make some interlocking corks for a B&M floorsless but I just cant get the shaping right. I've been at it for like a week now. I've come close, but still not the look and feel. The youtube tutorial is good and makes a decent cork to ride, but not even close to the look or feel. Anyone done a good round cork in newton?

Sarcasm or no? I can't tell.

I mean I know YOU haven't made any really good corkscrews since the program is after all a giant a pathetic crutch but other people might have done so with the experience they have using a real program that "carried over" into newton.

Define perfect. By what standards are you measuring perfection? Arrow corks are different than B&M corks, so on and so forth.

Your detector is broken; needs replacement. There are people that can make corkscrews fine in Newton. Fine enough for a 10 year old simulated roller coaster designing program to impress the nitpicky nincompoops.

I want to make an interlocking corkscrew set like Kumba at Bush Gardens. I've come close but they dont come out round, or symetrical from the top view, but they ride okay. I also want to have some lats to, to create that falling into the cork feeling. Somethings gotta be wrong with this program, things just dont seem to add up or turn out the way they should.

Nothing is wrong with the program, I assure you of that. What probably is wrong is that Newton doesn't offer exactly the right transition function for the B&M corkscrews. And that is absolutely true. At some point, I hope entropy releases a patch to add "custom" to the list of transition func's.

Disclaimer before the instructions: I've never actually made any "perfect" (or, frankly, anywhere close to perfect) corkscrews in Newton; these are the methods I've tried and never bothered to tweak to perfection. They work to get it approximate, but require some heavy tweaking.

Anyway, for a "perfect" B&M corkscrew in Newton, you're probably going to want to split it into 3 banking segments; 30-90, 90-270, and 270-330 (note: numbers are very approximate). For force, it will probably go something like 3 -> 3, then 3 -> 1 -> 3, then 3 -> 3. Note that the middle force section should be significantly longer than the middle banking section, but still centered at the apex. As for lats, I haven't got a clue. I've never really tried very hard at a B&M corkscrew in Newton. Might have to eventually, but until then, I'm not worried about it.

First, use a multizone segment. It's easier to get in and out of your element.
I would recommend, for the corkscrew part:

One Roll Subsection - 30 to 330 degrees is fine, but don't be afraid to use different kinds of transitions. In fact, if you are really picky, I would create your own and change the tension of the roll.

One Normal Subsection (If you want to use a bump transition) - 3 G's would be fine to start, but I would go a little lower than 1 G at the top of the corkscrew. It depends on how tight you want it to feel.
OR
Two or Three Normal Subsections (Depending on timing) - The first section would be 3 G's to 0.8 G's. The second, if there is one, would be a constant 0.8 G's (This will most likely be short). The third would be from 0.8 G's to 3 G's again.

Two Lateral Subsections - I would use bump transitions on both of these. The first would be from 0 to 0.3/0.4 back to 0. The second would be 0 to -0.3/-0.4 back to 0.


Again with all of these, change the types of transitions, and, if you would like, create your own. I hope this helps, and please post some pictures of this.

Thanks for the help, I have already tried a few of these ideas, and I dont want to settle for anything less than something that looks and rides great. So I will just bite the bullet and keep trying different methods and tweaking. I will but putting up some pics once I get the track work done. This is gonna be a big project for me, biggest yet, so track work has to be good. Thanks again for the help!

Going out on a stretch here, but I think he means perfect B&M when he says, oh I dunno "I am tring to make some interlocking corks for a B&M floorsless but I just cant get the shaping right."

Try looking at Jakizle's Odd One. I thought that last corkscrew was pretty good.

Just because he's using the B&M track and train model, doesn't necessarily mean he's creating a true to life B&M.

Assuming we're talking about Newton2, is the "timewarping" function within the transition menu not enough? It's very useful and very customizable when you just can't get that transition smooth with "Bernstein" or "Quintic".

No, it's not nearly enough. What if I want a function to go from 0 -> 60 -> -60 -> 0? Combining multiple transitions normally has that bit of a stop at the direction changes, which makes the ride feel really robotic.

Hmm; I just tried it. I have three banking sections all 1 sec long: 0 to 60, 60 to -60, then -60 to 0. Each has the Bernstein transition. Then when I save elements, I always do 2 smoothing and 2 taper at endpoints. It seems smooth to me. Can you confirm if it's the smooth and without-stop that you're looking for?

^Yes, that's the best method to date. Or at least a variant of it (I would probably not have them all at equal 1 second intervals, and I would have probably made a lot of timewarp changes). But it's not one continuous function, so it has underlying "Newton-y" feel.

The problem I have with the bernstein transition is that it has a not-quite-smooth feeling at the beginning, but it's really good if you're changing directions. That was just one example; there are probably 3 or 4 times every ride that I think, "I want this transition, but Newton won't let me"

Thanks for the upload. I took a look at the corks and they are alot more round than what I was getting but still have a long way to go. The shapes are off but very tweakable. I just got swamped with work and have no time to work on this project now. Hopefully next week I can get some hours in and come up with something to show. Thanks for all the posts!
