WASHINGTON?????????President Barack Obama said Wednesday he supports gay marriage, reversing his position on a controversial social issue just six months before the November election and adopting a stance fraught with political implications.

Mr. Obama had been under intense pressure this week to lay out a clear stance on gay marriage after Vice President Joe Biden and several top advisers endorsed it. Mr. Obama said he "personally" believes gays and lesbians should have the right to marry, a position he said he came to after several years of talking to friends and family and thinking about gay members of the military and of his staff who are raising children in monogamous relationships.

"I've been going through an evolution on this issue. I've always been adamant that gay and lesbian Americans should be treated fairly and equally," Mr. Obama said in an interview with ABC's "Good Morning America" anchor Robin Roberts. "At a certain point, I just concluded that for me, personally, it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think that same-gendered couples should be able to get married."

Don't really care. Doesn't affect me whatsoever, just like it doesn't affect the people who whine about it.

Word filter? Really?

Almost all politicians flip-flop on some subjects... It's nothing new because elections are almost equally about how much people like the person as it is about their plans, promises, etc. Its about how the general public views them, someone just has to hold them accountable for their changes.

He supports gay marriage, but he's not going to do anything about changing policy on gay marriage in the different states.

Remind me how this helps the cause, at all?

I see it more as a stance between "good" vs. "evil"

Essentially the majority of young voters who are interested in voting tend to go for the "good" guy. Most people under 30 years old support same-*** marriage. They think it's "good". Mitt Romney is flat-out against any government recognition of same-*** unions. People see that as "evil".
Oh, were you expecting something here?

Well, I should think so. The idea that a government would be against it just goes completely against basic Human rights. Imagine a country where the government was against women being able to vote, but worse than just that; the only reasoning used against women having the power to vote was some silly religious dogma. A basic Human right of equality in society, denied because of age old dogmatism that no longer applies.

It is a joke that there are still questions over subjects like gay marriage in "developed" countries. The fact that it is still a subject that potential presidents use in their campaign (either for or against) is actually beyond belief.

A person who is against homo***uals having the same rights as other human beings, is probably the same kind of person who thinks that Evolution should not be taught in the classroom, or at the very least should be taught on an equal playing field as "Intelligent Design". In short, these people want us to return to the dark ages, where their brains would have been better able to comprehend things.

EDIT: The word filtering on the site has gone way too far, this has now become a joke.

^Believe it or not, most people I know that are anti-gay aren't even religious. It's just deeply rooted in deep in their minds, by the christian upbringing 90% of them had.

That would be a prime example of what a poisonous thing supernatural religions are. It's like a virus.

Mitt Romney's ideas about gay marriage are based in his religion, though, and that's why I mentioned it. Christianity is the very definition of immorality, contrary to what Christians would like to profess [lol]

The thing is, the President in the US can't do poop about making policies. They can suggest policies to lawmakers, but they have no direct hand in policy creation (with a few exceptions). I think every reasonable person knows that Obama won't (can't, really) do anything about gay marriage in the short term, but his outspoken support is something we've never seen, and a lot of my LGBT friends see this as an opportunity to make it easier for allies in congress and the public sphere to "come out" as allies of the gay community. And with an "outing" of allies comes a larger group of supporters, and soon (if not immediately), people will discover that it really is OK to be in favor of equal rights. Of course the announcement by Obama is a political move. It's perfectly-timed at the beginning of his campaign, the day after North Carolina banned gay marriage outright (more on that in the next paragraph...unless there's already a thread about it, in which case I'll switch it over). But it's a necessary first step, and someone had to take it, and who better than the President?

Anyway, about the gay marriage ban in NC: it's a terrible, terrible thing, for sure, and clearly shows how stupid a lot of my fellow countrymen are. But at the same time it gives me hope for the future, because the only counties that voted against the amendment are the North Carolina college towns. There was an almost exact correlation between the number of bachelor's degree holders and the "No" states. That means that the higher education system is clearly doing something right.

Yeah, he doesn't seem to be doing anything to move forward, but it's just the prospect. It's a milestone. There is a president in office of the United States of America who supports the marrying of same *** couples. That's a big enough deal in itself.

My thoughts... that's awesome, and he's brave to be the president and speak publicly about this, but essentially it's not about being "brave," it's just about being a decent human being.

I wish it was enough for me to want to vote for him, but it's not.

lol.

thats not bravery .. it's called kissing ass for votes.. he did it last time by kissing up to people who were against gay marriage.. i think the little girl who was going for that beauty pageant and got ripped to shreds for her opinion , whether i agreed with it or not it was hers and she was entitled to it i think THAT was bravery . when the mayor of san diego, without anything to gain by doing so announced his support for gay marriage.. that was bravery. this is pandering .. and props gerts for not letting yourself get played by this guy ..

I think you mean every election in every country ever.

OT: Eh. Don't care, though if the LGBT people would quiet down instead of yelling "I'M GAY PAY ATTENTION TO ME", they would get a hell of a lot more respect than they do now. Think about it. A quiet, non-flamboyant (pun unintended) respectful protest or a full on make out with the closest guy/girl next to and complain that people get POed protest. Which gets a more positive response? Think about it.
A man has needs and that needs is booze.

I see where you're going there, but suppose for a second that it was "traditional" marriage that was being debated. You think straight people everywhere wouldn't be doing similar things?

Because being quiet totally worked for women's suffrage and black voting.

Based on that comment I bet you ten thousand dollars you're white, live in the midwest, and have a buzzcut.

You've never seen one of these parades in person have you?

So stupid everyone is, lol... he makes one statement about gay marriage and now everyone thinks that it's all he cares about or plans on focusing on. I hope humans become extinct sometime soon.

That^ is pretty funny though.
