Hello Everyone,

I am currently seeking feedback on some Theme Park questions from the general public and coaster enthusiast at large. In order to obtain this information I have built a brief, 5 minute anonymous survey which covers some aspects of ride and park operations.

Looks great, Mikey. Will this find it's way to the desks of anyone with any real power, though? As guests we can rabble and speculate as to why the parks are doing this, but what good does it do unless it finds the ears of people that can do something about it? I know, we as the guests do have power to an extent, as we continually give them our hard-earned money; but the executives and park managers, who can send the orders down the line?

IMO, in this industry a poll of 2000 is not really much to bargain with, 200,000 though, that you have something. Not all that surprised by the results though.

I'll add this, I know at Dorney, the top 10 rides always compete for the coveted #1 spot. (Thats for the throughput.) Talon always gets it by the end of the year but I know that they all fight for it on a daily basis. This means our ride crews are trained to go fast, not too fast, but fast. The goal is to not stack trains on Talon and Hydra and Force. Easier on Force then the other two though. Either way, the lines move quicker, and the guests sometimes get in on the fun by cheering our crews on. Normally on any busy day, Saturdays for example, the wining crew get a fee lunch the next day for their hard work. Keep the crews happy to increase effectiveness, thereby keeping guests happy. Glad we got a new manager who could understand that last season. Now its a win-win for all.

I'd rather the ride-ops take a little longer to check all the restraints than to have a lower dispatch time. I've seen it numerous times that ride-ops left and right of the train compete on who's across the platform faster. The result: the only lightly touch the restraint instead of testing if it's locked. Seatbelts are only glanced upon.

I am all for higher throughput, but I'd rather wait a little longer than have ride-ops who think they're playing a game rather than caring about the safety of the guests.

Can you explain what type of seat belts you say are being missed?

Are these the type that go over the waist, or the type that connect into the restraint such as those on premier or B & M trains?

Keep in mind that checking restraints is optional, it's not done at all parks. It is the riders responsibility to ensure that they have secured thier restraint as tightly to them as possible.

Rides are designed to a certain percentage of play in the restraints, sometimes as much as 30% and the restraint fit is still considered acceptable. We only started checking restraints each cycle, when the mechanisms that lock the restraints could not be visually inspected each day. It also provides piece of mind to the guest.

However the level of slowness we are talking about is as much as 50%, even a fresh crew who works using the methods can hit 75% of capacity with out even trying to hard. We are talking about a purposeful and noticeable slow down.

It is not likely to change the ways of the evil empire it directly targets. The reason being this two lines of text pulled from the quarterly report:

"One of our fundamental business goals is to generate superior returns for our stockholders over the long term."

The bottom line they are trying to make an investor power play so that they can get enough liquidity to draw down on the 1.2 billion in debt.

"Our current and future liquidity is greatly dependent upon our operating results, which are driven largely by overall economic conditions as well as the price and perceived quality of the entertainment experience at our parks."

I would guess that they will continue to gut the parks until they find the right formula for the perceived quality vs guest value and attendance drops. The problem is that I think the numbers are a bit fudged, if they are not downright doing this to hide the fact that they are really having a bad year from investors.

The waist seatbelts weren't checked or looked at. The 'crotch to restraint' belts were only visually checked. I do know that legally speaking it is the guests responsibility, but like with height restrictions, it is the task of the ride operator or attendant to make sure the restraints are tight and everybody is tall enough. If something where to happen and the park's response would be "It's their own fault, they didn't do as was told them on the ride signs/instruction TV's", then that park's reputation would be doomed forever.

And even if pull the restraint tight it just the guest's task, checking the restraint's lock should be the ride-op's task. For me personally I would not dispatch a train if I not all restraints were checked.

As for timing, I can only speak for my own experience operating a GCI with two trains. With a good partner we can have about 5-10 seconds margin to stacking while checking each restraint and seatbelt. I believe that this can be achieved on other coasters as well.
