I was riding I-305 the other day, and was on the cable lift when the guy in front of me said, "what if the cable lift fails?" I knew it was improbable, but still, it kinda has me thinking; what is preventing the train from flying back into the station? I don't think they are normal anti-rollbacks since cable lifts are silent.
It's been a long time

I'm guessing there's some sort of emergency brake system like on cable launches. Reference: http://rollercoaster.wikia.com/wiki/Rollback

I know there are anti-locks on there, they are just a bit quieter and hidden away.
If you have ever heard MF start up after a slowdown or stop on the lift.
It sounds like something breaking off the lift, these are the anti-lock brakes.

Also, I got stuck on I305 in April for 20 minutes and we didn't fall back down and die, so, I'm going to assume their are anti-locks on there :P

MF has the loudest antirollbacks I've ever heard. I can tell they've done a lift stop from across the park.

I KNOW, I'm always thinking something is breaking and then I realize its just the anti locks.

I can't find a good picture, so I'll try and run over to MF and take a pic this week.

They're on almost every car; however you can only see them from the back of the last car. Next time you're approaching the load station, look at the back of the train. You'll see 2 rubber black wheels. These wheels are attached to the Anti Roll Back (ARB) system. They make contact with a portion of the lift. Once the rubber wheels are spinning forward, the ARBs are lifted. As soon as the wheels slow (in other words, the train slows) or the wheels roll in reverse, the ARB are dropped.

EDIT:
I found a pic:

After a quick search, I found a great pick from someone on FLICKR from Winter Chillout event.

You can see the whole system in this shot.

inb4 dictionary corner debating the semantics of "rollercoasters"

There are several rides that use electric engines to power them eg Mack Runaway Mine Train:

Anything bigger would just be quite inefficient and honestly would probably take away a lot of the thrill!
