Old, I know. But still:
Sorry, but me has something nOOb-ish to say: Your hard drive works with magnetic fields, not bumps/scratches/pits etc. That's why drives have a label not to expose to strong magnetic fields or a magnetically shielding outer casing. Basically HDDs are super-thick floppies stacked on top of eachother, with read/write heads in between.
