Database and special characters

?? just wanted to see some of the projects here, after a long NL2 break, when i realized, that i couldn't log in anymore.
Like you see, my Nickname is now completely messed up, but i like it =D
(No i wont change it, because its epic now).

The name required UTF-8 encoding on the site and the database

(means: "small fox", in german if you're wondering)

Sometimes i give my coasters also german names, that uses those special characters
and im not sure, what would happen, if the title gets messed up. It could be problematic for the search option.

here is an example of a real rollercoaster, that also uses a german name with special characters:
M??useachterbahn
http://rcdb.com/1030.htm

A user sided solution would be:
?? = ae
?? = oe
?? = ue

And i didn't tested the trackexchange, yet.
Its just a small information.

I dont really care, if its changed or not, but dont blame me,
if i upload "M??useachterbahn" into your trackexchange and your database crashes

I feel "Special Characters" are also messed up in other contents here, such as Exchange, Forum, User Avatar, and so on. Coding bugs still exist. No problem, though.

This all occurred during the database rollback of 2015.

PHPBB supports UTF8 data types out of the box, but unfortunately the URL rewriter that makes the structured urls for the site does not. You can upload your track with special characters, but you won't be able to view the page or download the tracks because the URL will 404. The only way we would be able to get around this would be to string replace the special characters inline or disable pretty urls for special characters.
