I've had an idea for a contest where participants have to design a coaster that fits in the area where the smiler currently is, that could be built if it got demolished.

rules:

1: the coaster must fit within the designated area

2: participants cannot use these coaster types (alton towers already has them):
- rocket (rita)
- flying coaster (air)
- suspended coaster (nemesis)
- dive machine (oblivion)
- spinning coaster (sonic spinball)
all other coaster types are allowed.

3: custom stations, scenery and theming are allowed.

i would need someone to design the realistic template.

what do you think?

^ This is actually not bad! Plus you're also clarifying what rides the builders may not use for this contest, to make this plan for "Alton Towers" sound legit.

:)

Doesn??t have Alton Towers have height restrictions as well? They should be in rules as well to make it more realistic.
I??d be in when you actually start the contest, really like the idea :)

^thanks for that, looking on Wikipedia it sounds like nothing is supposed to be built above the tree line. is that correct? if it is, I'll put it in the rules.

Yeah Alton does have a tree height limits (hence Nemesis being dug in a hole). It might also be worth working out Smiler's throughput and having that as an additional rule!

I love the idea! If you can type up an actual rule set, some more detailed requirements, prize, small concept, and so on as you would be hosting this contest... I have no problem approving this contest. I may even consider joining ;)

^^ ok, here they are:

prize: 1st place- 100 points from me, 2nd place- 75 points from me and 3rd place- 50 points from me (yes, I'm prepared to do that!).

concept: design a roller coaster that would fit into the smiler's area, that could be built if it got demolished. from the entries received, the judges will pick a top three, which they will rank 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

time limit: 1 month.

rules & requirements:

1. participants cannot use these coaster types (alton towers already has them):
-flying coaster (air)
-rocket coaster (rita)
-dive machine (oblivion)
-spinning coaster (sonic spinball)
-inverted coaster (nemesis)
all other types are permitted.

2. the coaster must stay inside the allocated area

3. the whole coaster, including buildings, must be below the tree-line.

4. the coaster must match the smiler's capacity, 1,000 riders per hour.

5. custom stations, scenery and theming are allowed.

important: please could someone to design the realistic template for me?

Sounds good rules and what not. As for the points I think we should up them. 500 for 1st, 250 for 2nd, and 100 for 3rd. Also I think a month is a tad bit too long. Especially since if we start this in a few weeks then it will end right around middle December and the NL2 tournament will be hosted January first. I purpose a "speed" contest. Possibly 3 weeks max would be good. As for the points, I will gladly give the points out to the winners. As for the template, you could easily just download an unpasscoded Smiler rec and then outline the ride then delete the actual ride and supports. Lastly, who would judge?

Use unfrozen supports and just simply "draw" the outline of the ride. As for judges, I would but I would love to join in so I would recommend a good friend of mine, Titanrocks01. He is judging the quarterly with me and an actual ride op so he knows how rides are supposed to work and supports and what not. He is very knowledgeable in both real life coasters and NL2. I would recommend either 2/3 judges so that way its not biased.

^ok, I'll try doing the template after I've had my tea, then i'll pm titanrocks01 about judging, and think about other judges as well.

sorry for the double post, I've thought of some more rules for the contest:

1. the coasters must pass all the usual tests (e-stop, clearance, tunnel etc).

2. any signage around the area must reflect the ride (the signs in x-sector reflect the smiler).

what do you think?

1) certainly - this is a must.

2) eh. not convinced on perhaps the wording on this rule? X-Sector was themed to be a government testing facility (taken over by the Ministry of Joy for the introduction of the Smiler). Might I suggest that the rule implies that more points will be given to a ride that fits into this theme of experimentation?

Have you had any luck with the Template - Jammy might be able to help you out by stripping his recreation down to the bare terrain and give you a rough fenceline to work the template with.

^ what I mean is that if the smiler did get removed, the signage would either be reverted back to the original or re-themed to the new attraction in it's place.
as for the template, blase is sorting it out for me.

Signage would mean adding custom scenery around the ride. Not everyone is a 3d scenery pro or has the time to do that.
Perhaps you could consider it more as bonuspoints instead of making it a rule. :)

I am curious on what you are going to do with the terrain. (Since the ride is placed on a slope.) Would be we allowed to modify it and adjust it as much as we like, or leave it completely untouched?

the terrain must be left untouched. that's what I think alton towers would do if they put a new coaster there, as they would want to spend as little money as possible.

Sounds good, as for the signage I don't think it must be required. Maybe to add to the overall score. but not required. I have been in contact with Jammy and he is working with Nemesis94 on the package now. He said he will get back to me sometime this week.
