Cedar Point Causeway Breaks 2016?

A kind of funny and a kind of uh-oh story today...

The Cedar Point Causeway just might be showing its age.

Sources told the Register a large crane heading to Cedar Point compromised the bridge, an almost 60-year-old structure.

The causeway, which is the amusement park???s main thoroughfare for traffic, connects the mainland to the peninsula.

Park officials recently shut down portions of the causeway???s eastern lane for what they???re calling ???routine maintenance.??? Cedar Point owns and operates the private road.

???Inspections revealed that we have to make some repairs, but at no time was the bridge unsafe,??? park spokesman Tony Clark told the Register on Thursday. ???The lane remains closed as we await the repairs to begin.???

One source familiar with engineering aspects of bridges told the Register the guts of the bridge below the road surface need to be reinforced.

Construction work at Cedar Point required heavy-duty equipment, including a crane estimated to weigh 200 tons. It???s not clear how that crane can be returned over the causeway with the bridge requiring repairs.

Several other unknowns exist about the situation, including how extensive the repairs could be or how long the job will take to complete.
