Interesting Screamscape rumor says that SFMM's Viper might be on its way out in 2017.
Park News - (9/14/16) Screamscape received a rumor this week that I found to be a little disturbing to me personally. Our rumor claims that Six Flags may be considering removing the park's iconic Viper coaster as early as mid to late 2017 in order to build a newer coaster on the hillside plot of land it calls home for 2018.
Previous rumors have already indicated that the next big coaster being planned for Six Flags Magic Mountain may be the chain's first B&M Dive Machine coaster, and I can see how that particular site could be beneficial for that kind of coaster design. Still... Viper is still kind of special to me and I'd hate to ever see it go. I was still a San Diego boy at the time and I remember fondly driving up to the park on Viper's opening day back in 1990 to ride it with a group of friends.
The line stretched from just inside the entrance near the carousel, up the hill to the station, turned around and went back down the hill to the carousel and then turned around and went back up the hill once again before entering into the station and proper queue area that was built for it. All said and done I think we ended up waiting about 2.5 to 3 hours to ride it that day, and we loved it.
I really would hate to see Viper go, even though it isn't the biggest or best anymore, and it is far from being the smoothest ride out there today... but it's a special kind of monster that I'd love to see stand long enough to be able to bring all my kids out to ride it with me. The good news is that the site is apparently only one of a small group being considered for the park's 2018 project, so depending on the site and final attraction selection, Viper could be safe. For now, enjoy Viper while you still have it and ride it once for me.

I'm honestly surprised it lasted as long as it did if it leaves in 2017. I always figured at SFGAdv and SFMM that the Medusa/Scream! clones were a "replacement" looping ride.

This disturbs me. Walking into the park you can see the ride. It's almost an iconic look. It's a relatively smooth arrow, visually appealing. Also you can hear it clear across the park.

If they replace it then they must replace it with something of significance.

Dive coasters suck imo and would hate to see them take away Viper for this. I highly doubt they'd do it given the visual appeal viper has at the entrance.

Not to mention the fact that it's an iconic ride that is on a lot of merch. I feel like Viper is way more iconic to SFMM than the other Toomer triplets were to their respective parks.

The only one that really really needed to go was Shockwave. GASM was "fixed" Shockwave with the less violent MCBR turn (really SFGAdv fanboys it was worse), and the loops didn't crack in half requiring emergency welding every year lol.

I'm somewhat torn on this one. On one hand, Viper is an icon of SFMM and is still a decent ride despite its age. On the other, it has one of the lowest ridership numbers in the park (at least among the major coasters) and sits on a prime piece of land for a major new coaster. While I like the ride, I would be okay with replacing it provided the replacement is a quality attraction that is both unique (at least for the west coast) and something that improves the park's lineup. A B&M Dive Coaster would be acceptable, but a B&M Giga would be the best fit IMO (yes, I know that has about a 1% chance of actually happening). Whatever they do, it is almost guaranteed that the replacement will be viewed as an improvement in the eyes of the public, and that is really what matters.

As for Justice League, I think that is the best possible addition for SFMM at this point and I'm excited for the ride. I still can't understand why many people elsewhere felt that it was a wasted addition for the park.

I want to say no to the removal of Viper because that also goes pretty well with X2, actually!

Ok but how desperate you have to be to voluntarily fly from another country to go to Thorpe?

Have you been to the park? It's beautiful, versatile, and worth many days of fun.

There's a bunch of other parks I'd call beautiful before even considering SFMM. The park is pretty fun overall, but I can't see myself going back to ride anything other than X2, Viper, and Riddler. It's only worth many days of fun because the operations and crowds absolutely suck. I did the whole park in one day with a flash pass and even then got tired of it quickly. The park is just a sea of coasters and concrete with barely any flat rides mixed in.

I liked Knott's much better than SFMM and out of all the parks I've visited, SFMM is pretty low on the list of the parks I would want to revisit in the future.

And that is exactly what six flags wants there customers to do. Be drawn in, forced to spend way more money then originally advertised while giving you the bare minimum they possibly can.

The place has its flaws, but I agree with you over all. And Viper has seen better days. It's an absolute skip for me now, and although I'd be sad to see such an iconic coaster go, I can't argue there are MUCH better looping coasters out there now.

One of SFMM's biggest flaws is that it is terribly inconsistent. I have been on days that were nearly identical crowd wise and had very different experiences. That said, the park has improved tremendously over the past few years and almost everyone I've visited with ended up enjoying it more than they expected to. I usually tell people that if you want to spend a day riding roller coasters, it is absolutely worth a visit, as the park has arguably the best coaster collection in the world. If you're looking for a complete park experience, So Cal's other major parks are a better option. It is not a top tier park, but I'd say it's probably my second favorite Six Flags (after Great Adventure, though I haven't visited the Texas parks or Over Georgia) and second favorite So Cal park after Disneyland (Knott's is a better park, but it gets stale when you visit 10+ times per year).

I will be the first one to jump on their bad behaviors and costly merch (as I have in many trip reports in the past) but SFMM remains one of my top parks for many reasons including the versatile landscape, the many rides, the food doesn't actually taste like waste, and many other reasons. The park itself is beautiful minus the Mad Max wet dream dirt in the back lots but even then the coasters make up for the lack of appearances back there. BTR, Riddler, Apocalypse.. All are very fun and unique in their own way (minus BTR as it's a clone) but even still the park holds a lot to offer.

The park is kind of standing in the desert area (not sure if I am describing that dry terrain well, though), so it looks like to me an oasis.

Xtreme Oasis, rather than Xtreme Park. :)
