When i connect sections on a coaster up (by selecting ends of track then clicking "connect"), and it becomes a complete circuit, it turns into one complete station or lift for some reason.
what am i doing wrong?

You need to ensure you have section type separators on each side of your lift/station otherwise the editor doesn't know to stop it from being a lift/station. Basically add a type separator to the section of track you just connected and drag it to suit.

If that doesn't make sense I'll sketch something up when I get onto NL (or if someone beats me to it)

I've built a small-ish kiddie coaster with one train, but when i test it the train stops at the top of the lift. anyone know why?

How many blocks are there and are they all longer than the train?

There's just the station, lift and a short transport (friction wheels) section.

I'm not completely sure if this will fix the problem, but you might have to have a third block. I don't know why you would need an extra one since you already have more blocks than trains, but it's worth a shot.

Yeah, you always need at least one block break on your coaster, unless it's a shuttle coaster. A transport is closer related to track than a break. The lift is like a block break, but the next block break has to be clear before the train before it can proceed. If there's no block break after a previous block break, then it has to either enter the station or stay on that block.
