That ride is such a nightmare, and an eyesore to boot.

I think it's most likely to have been caused by either wind or passenger load.

This was likely caused by failing LIMs or friction values on the train set to high or a combination of both.

I should explain that the LIM systems on these rides are very primitive and by modern standards considered obsolete. Modern systems can adjust to account for under performing LIM modules within a chain, where as these are basically individually triggered in timed sequence relative to a base location. If they fire, great, if they don't, well theres a few backups in there just in case. Until those fail too, in which case:

Looks more like a case of not enough cycling after the winterstop.

And in typical SF fashion the 2017 season has begun and construction is only a little done
What are these for?

If I recall correctly Intamin cable launches have an (entirely different system but) similar method of regulating launches where each launch is monitored in a variety of ways and the system then adjusts the amount of power required for the launch as the day goes on.

The feed back mechanism on these is based on the RPM of the winch drum which is detected by an encoder. The system increases pressure until RPM is at the value required for exit velocity. If the pressure spikes, say the cable broke, than it sees that from the pressure sensors dropping on the input side of the winch and runs the shut down process. There are proxy switches through out the launch to know when the train has passed certain locations so the mags can be released back to the home position and I believe in later models these are also used as speed gate proxies. Generally a series of gate proxy switches exist at the end of the launch, and these are used as an intermediary to verify exit velocity.

Christ almighty that could've actually been a lot worse than it was.
Ok but how desperate you have to be to voluntarily fly from another country to go to Thorpe?
