STUART, Fla. -- A dramatic rescue ended tragically in Stuart, Florida, a rescue so difficult firefighters say they have never seen anything like it.

It happened late Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning at the home of a 600-pound woman who was having trouble breathing. Rescuers went in not knowing how difficult it would be to get her out. 40-year-old Gail Grinds was literally stuck to her couch and had to be removed surgically at the hospital.
Authorities estimate she had been on the couch anywhere from two to five years.

Martin County Fire amd Rescue crews faced what seemed to be an impossible mission. Everyone going inside had to wear protective gear. The stench was so powerful they had to blast in fresh air.

They tried to cut out the front door, but at four-and-a-half feet wide, it wouldn't work. They had to cut plywood since a normal stretcher wouldn't do.

An ambulance was too small, so they brought in a trailer to get her out. While rescue crews came up with a back-door rescue plan, detectives secured what had become a crime scene, questioning family members about how it got so bad.

Using planks, they loaded the woman on to the trailer, still attached to the couch. Removing her would be too painful, since her body is grafted to the fabric. After years of staying put, her skin has literally become one with the sofa and it must be surgically removed.
Detectives are investigating whether they have a case of neglect, or if it is simply a very sad story.
Grinds was taken to the Martin Memorial hospital where doctors removed her from the couch, but she died in spite of all the attempts to save her life.

Discuss.

It really puts things into perspective. 600 pounds, holy --Staff Edit--. I am over wieght and I only wiegh about 200, I don't know how anyone could let themselves get to be that big. I feel discusted with myself and im not even half of what she was.
Purely discusting, but also sad that she maybe couldn't afford help or get it. And sad that she passed.

The word you seek is "disgusted" and it's not sad that she passed. It's sad that she became that.

Good riddance. Someone had to pay for the food to make her that big and to allow her to survive so it's someone else's fault just as much as her own. This isn't a sad story, it's a stupid one.

I agree, this is just another example of how society has tried to teach everyone to accept and care for everyone else. If you weigh 600 pounds it's your own damn fault.

Well it is sad that she became that, but I don't see how its not sad that she passed away. Alot of the times over eating is a very hard mental addiction. I know first hand. I guess you have a point that someone was supporting her eating habbits by purchasing food for her, but its not like you can just let them starve. Even with all that body fat, she would still need to eat. And I don't think a story like this is stupid. For alot of people it can be eye openers on what could be in their future. A person may not wiegh 600 pounds, but they could just as easy have a heart attack or something similair due to their wieght problems. Reading a story like this can give some motivation to people in need to lose weight.

Yeah, but I'm insensitive, I'm 6'4 and weigh 180 lbs, and I'm lazy. So being spoiled like this makes me incompassionate towards fat people.

I'm skinny, I can eat whatever I want and I rule. Lots of people watch what they eat excercise daily and are fat. That's funny.

lmao, i agree with everything MoP has said s far. What the hell is the point of living if you going to sit on a couch for 2-5. Im lazy but sheesh, thats just disgusting and i really couldnt care less for the woman. I dont see why anyone should care, call me what you want but i just find obeese people disgusting. These are the type of people that if you left in the jungle for a day would die almost instantly, due to the fact that there legs would snap under there wieght, renderring them helpless to all the creatures that would gourge on thier rotting bodies...woah maybe i got a little side tracked. Anyway, it was the womans own fault, and whoever keep feeding her

You got a point, I mean, honostly some one who abuses themself like that probably doesn't deserve to live. And she was basically dead already, 5 years on a couch...."discusting" lol, j/k.
How can any one become 600 freaking pounds!!! Holy freaking crap, I can't even gain weight, much less muscle[dunno] no matter how hard I try, but h3ll, when you get to be 300 pounds, you gotta realise you gotta do something, instead of sit on the couch and eat more till your 600 pounds!!!! I don't really think she was all there for lots of reasons.[sillyme]

Maybe she was just mentally incapable to control what she was doing.

o hell thats just an excuse. everyone is perfectly capable of controlling themselves. if you have an addiction to food or ciggaretts or alcohol, you might want to stop, but feel that your not able to. its just an excuse. if you really really want to stop, then you stop. its just a matter of how much you care about the problem. as for being 600 pounds, that's rediculous. if she was stuck to the couch for 5 years then its better off that there was a change.. yes she happened to die and its sad, but she must have been a terrible burden for everyone to take care of her. she's a perfect example of someone who just doesnt care.

I agree with what MoP said, cus I am 6'1" and am 150 pounds and I eat almost constantly, so I actually don't understand how people get fat. Except for playing football (*sigh* "Soccer" *raises eyebrow and shakes head* americans, tut tut tut lol) some nights, all i do is sit at this computer and drink beer and eat and sleep and play my PS2 and stuff, I really don't do any excersise apart from the football, and so, I just think its funny that people are fat because I know how much I eat, which trust me, is a lot. I've won 4 eating competitons [:D], I have 3 meals at meal time, like a full roast sunday meal while people around me just have the one I also like to indulge in a full sunday roast dinner for supper, which is a massive meal to most people anyway, not to mention all the portions of Pie and chips that I have (all british food i just described lol). So to me, I just think well, its their own fault, because to get fat they must have eaten an inconceivable amount of food if i can eat that much and not be fat!
