how did start your coaster obsession?

I'd started mine first with just drawing lines with cars on it. I even drew a coaster with lipstick on the walls when i was young [lol] When i was exploring my old work i've scanned a picture. I'm defenatly sure this will fail e-stop test [;)]
http://members.home.nl/ermen.dirk/Websi ... n-1998.jpg
I drew that 7 years ago. [:D]

After having the kiddie coasters i'd wanted slowly more coasters, starting with 1 looping as inversion. And bring that up to more a ride. Going faster every time. The bigger coasters came to holland so i'd also went to ride some.

Here's a webpage i made with all onride photo's i've found till now: http://members.home.nl/ermen.dirk/Website/onride.html
Even including my very first onride picture. When i was about 1 year old [lol]

So what's your coaster history and how did you start to get into coaters?

[lol] thats funny Dirk, I tell you, its not the E-stop failing that you want to be worried about, I think you might want to worry about the fact that you would die on every element [lol]

With me, my coaster obsession started very suddenly when I was about 13 or 14. Until that age, I infact had never really liked coasters, to be honest, I was a bit scared [lol]. My family has always gone to Alton Towers every year since it was opened and ever since I was about 5, they have been taking me aswell. I always liked to stand and watch the coasters going round but as soon as my dad asked me if I wanted to go on the ride, I'd try to do anything to make sure I didn't get on the ride[lol]. Fast forward to Roller Coaster Tycoon, that game is the reason I have an obsession for coasters, when I was 13 (I think) I aquired RCT from a friend who was bored of it after only a few weeks of playing. I played it once, was hooked and played it virtually non stop for the next 2 years, it was around that time that I actually began to ride the rides when we went to alton towers, instead of just watching them. Now I make sure to go to Alton Towers at least twice a year and at least 2 other parks. I never stop coming up with layouts and inversion, in school, all I do is draw layouts. I have a pile of paper in my room about 2 foot high, with layouts that I've said "Wow, I'll put that on this pile, I must build that one sometime" [lol] I think about 99% of them will never get made as I think of layouts faster then I can make them.

You have RCT to thank for me being on this website ... I wouldn't be surprised if you all start burning effigies of RCT now [lol]

Hmm when RCT1 came out, I think maybe in 1998-1999 at least was wen I got real hooked. Then after RCT1 RCT2. After NL came out for mac I got it like less than one month it was released. So I am still hooked on NL, and I would be on RCT2 aswell, if I could get a fricken decent PC. I would like to play AOM TT too, since things arent looking up for the mac release. But Dirk, I used to draw alot like that! Of course not on walls :p.

For me again it was the release of RCT1. I was actualy addicted to the game. Most days i would pretend i was ill to get the day off school, just to complete a scenerio, i was seriously on the game 24/7. Thats really when i started loving coasters. Also when i was around 4 i would go to Thorpe Park and Chessington regulary and meet my cousins there. I cant really remember much of what the parks used to be like then. But i always remebers the Bubble Works at Chessington and the Depth Charge at Thorpe park

My coaster obsession started when I rode my first real coaster in 1998. It was Python at Efteling. Later that year I rode El Condor, and I wass hooked. The reales of RCT was either in 1998 or 1999. Anyways a friend of mine got the demo. It had a 20minutes time limit, but it was loads of fun. Then the game came, and I played it all the time. I think it's 3 or 4 parks I haven't completed at RCT1.( did anyone ever complete the Rainbow Valley scenario?) And when Added Atractions and Loopy Landscapes came. Well I have used so much time on that game. In 2000 I visited Disneyland Paris. Somwtime after this I discoverred CoasterForce. I used that site a lot. That site was basicly my entry to the coaster community. Now I play NL, RCT2, am a member of ECC and board member of The Norwegian Coaster Club.

well, for me, it was when i was about 8, and went to Portaventura in Spain.
Dragon Khan was the very first proper coaster i went on, and i loved it.
Then when i found out about RCT, i got it, and there i was hooked. I absolutly loved coasters now, and have remained that way!

Lol, dirk, you had quite an imagination there. Those vehicles look like trucks!

Anyways, for me, I was in 3rd grade when dad randomly bought me RCT, then I got CC and then LL, it was really fun, then I got a bunch of other random sims, including my first CAD type program in 5th grade, hyper rails, then at 6th grade sumer, I finaly found NL, then, a bit later, I found SM, thanks to a few links. [lol]

I never really got to ride a coaster (well, I did, space mountain actually) until I was in middle school, which I would go to CP each year. Last 2 times, it was a blast, first of the last 2 times, I got to go on MF, then it was TTD, I still very well remember about all of the nausea in RCT and how I was scared of the same thing. As it turned out, at my 1st time at CP, Raptor was my first true coaster, which in RCT, would really get the barfers going! Anyways, I went on it, and the main problem was the vertical g's, and I couldn't keep my head up, lol. After the ride, I was only a bit dizzy, no fear of sickness was needed. Then, I went on some small rides later on. Oh yeah, I remember how much blue streak pissed me off, the airtime was really annoying for some reason. [lol] 2nd year, the lines were alot smaller, which is when I got to ride MF, as I've said above. The 3rd time, which happened a few months ago (in august 2004), was when I finaly got to ride TTD as I've said, but I got the front, and sacfificed an extra hour for it, and man, was it worth it. This was also the first time I departed from my group and went alone, since the group I was in had no concerns about not being able to ride the large rides (I even got some reminders on C2k to ride the small ones, and the only one I tried to go on was disaster transport, but I was impatient and went out of the line through an exit and moved onto blue streak, still small, lol, but it was fun) Anyways, I found a group that rides the larger rides, but that was on the brake run of TTD [lol], so I didn't feel like waiting for them and moved on. I rode a few others, like magnum, which was annoyingly rough, and then MF, then after some other stuff, I got to blue streak, which of course, I enjoyed the airtime, which I started to really enjoy. (and why I prefer hypers/gigas/stratas over B&M's and Vekoma corkscrews. [lol] ) Then, there was a thunderstorm so I couldn't ride blue streak again, and had to leave, but I already got all the rides I wanted.

Wow, sorry for getting really off topic, lol.

Really my inspiration came from when I finally was able to get on most coasters. I never passed height restrictions of 48" until I was about 10, and 54" when I was 13. Even now I'm still 59" lol. When I first got on Top Gun and Demon @ PGA, I was just addicted. Then when I went to SFMW, I got on Medusa 4x in one day, and I totally fell in love with coasters from that point onwards. Then one day I got RCT2. On my visit to SFMM, I decided to recreate Goliath since the default one sucked. It so many restrictions though, so I couldn't remake it. Then I got Scream Machines and headed on from there really, and since Goliath was during the trial period, I never got to save it. I've decided that it'll probably be my final project - I really want to make perfect recreation.

Dude, everyone has a reason to like coasters. Or they notice on some way how they started to like coasters. Like me i just drew lines that suppost to be a coaster. Can't you call that a sign? [;)] So, don't be ashamed for the reason, bring it up [:D]

Hmm, not sure really. Guess it started when i rode hornet at Flambards Cornwall when i wsa about 4 or 5. From then on i have lived for coasters. Although my obsession on them started at about 8 years old, although i had still loved coasters previously. It happened on family trip to Florida, and we went in this book store, and i bought the book roller coaster by David bennet. It is the best coaster book i have and thiswas when i read it. Yes i read the whole book (including an amusement park physics, the anatomy of a ride section, or whatever it was called) although i didnt understand it. lol. This was when i really got hooked on coasters. And this was when i discoverd the rides of Harry Traver and the Church&Prior partnership! Then my first proper Big big ride was nemesis at Alton Towers when i was 9. I was mcuh to small, and my uncle held on to me all the way around. I have followed coasters ever since.

my obsession started at about 18 months old. my mom took me to rocky point park in RI (now closed [:(]) and because i was too young to ride the rides, we just walked around and watched them. they had an arrow loop + corkscrew coaster (http://www.rcdb.com/ig446.htm) and i couldnt stop watching it. we occasionally went back and i was obsessedwith it. finally when i was about 6 i rode on their cyclone coaster (http://www.rcdb.com/ig439.htm) but i got a terrible gut-wrenching feeling while going down the drops, so i became petrified of coasters, but still was obsessed with them. i wouldn;t get on one, but desperatly wanted to know everything about them. then the very first version of disney's "coaster" came out when i was in 4th grade, but i had the wrong kind of computer so the damned thing didnt work (evil macs). then we started going to riverside park (currently six flags new england) and i'd watch the rides there.. same goes for canobie lake park. i didn;t actually get the nerve to go on a coaster again untill about 1999 when my 8th grade school trip was to six flags new england where i rode the thunderbolt...again and again and again. the next year, (2000) i had built my way up to wanting to go to cedar point (i had always wanted to, but this time i planned on riding stuff) and i started with the small coasters, and worked my way up to magnum but didnt go on mantis or millenium force. corkscrew was my first looping coaster, and although i'd black out on the loop (disorienting) i still loved it. then i went on SROS back at sfne, and from 2000-2003, i worked my way up untill i pretty much figured i can ride anything not built by togo. and then i went back to cp to ride MF and TTD in 2004, but sadly TTD was closed and MF sucked. so basically i've always been obsessed with coasters, but havent always liked riding them.

also, between staring at coasters and not staring at them, i'd try to draw them too. starting out as squigles on paper, then moving up to squiggles with cars, then squiggles with cars and supports and i eventually became rather good at it. then i got nl and rct so i don;t have to draw anymore.[:)]

er... canobie lake's coaster (corkscrew) isnt the same thing... canobie lake's coaster is a clone, and it's been cloned a whole lot. the one at rocky point has only been cloned a few times.

The first time I felt brave enough to go on a "big" ride was at the fair and I bravely rode the rock-o-plane. It was my first experience of losing my stomach on a ride and also going upside down, but I absolutely loved it. My second "big" ride was still not a roller coaster. I made it a tradition to go to Nashville Shores every year. One year I heard they were getting a new slide. It was advertised as a family raft slide, so I was thinking it would be like one of those wide slides with round rafts that the whole family can go on together. When I got there I saw it and freaked out. It was near vertical. While waiting in line for all of the other slides I would look at that slide, trying to decide whether or not I should ride it. Finally, my mom convinced me to go on it. I went down by myself, but up to 3 people could be on a raft. I sat at the edge of the drop, waiting to be sent down. When I was pushed over the drop I felt the terrifying experience of airtime. I was shivering and cringing all the way down the drop, but I managed to keep my eyes open. When the raft went up on the other side, I felt more relaxed. I could not wait to ride it again.
After that experience I had to wait a whole year beore the water parks and amusement parks were open. I went on a school field trip in 8th grade to Kentucky Kingdom, not expecting to ride anything. I went around the park with two of my best friends, who loved roller coasters. The first part of the day I waited on a bench and watched them ride Twisted Twins over and over. I thought it looked scary, so I decided to ride the wild mouse first, my very first roller coaster! It was not scary, and I wasn't really expecting it to be. After that my friends got me to ride Twisted Twins. I felt incredibly relaxed going up the lift hill. I already knew what to expect from the drop, since it was similar to the steep water slide. At the top I was more nervous than excited. I did not know the girl sitting next to me, but we talked to each outher all hte way up the lift hill. I quickly learned that roller coasters are a good way to meet new people. After riding it once I was hooked. I wanted to go on it again and again. I was even brave enough to ride Chang, which even surprised me!

well when i was 4 i would always ride the kiddie coasters at the local fair. i'd also ride this one ferris wheel that would roll upside down. age 6 came my very first real coaster- The Great American Scream Machine at SFoG. i would always watch in awe at the steel looping coasters. i had been afraid of falling out even though i wasn't afraid to ride the fair rides that would go upside down. strange huh? then when i was 8 i think, i rode Viper at SFoG (RIP) i was soooo scared but my mom had finally gottten me into the front row. my 5 year old brother, being the daredevil he was (and still is) was happy to join us. that was the true beginning of my life. i rode that think at least 6 more times. and when the sad winter break came along, i got RCT for my Bday, which helped on those cold days where a trip to Six Flags was not possoble. and it still does!![:D]

My obsession started not on coasters, but all the flat rides. I always loved trying out the flats but didn't care for the coasters. (I was chicken up to the 4th grade). Finally, I got dragged on the Giant Dipper @ SCBB and was threatened that we'd leave if I didn't atleast try it. I tried it and as soon as I got off, I got in line again like 3 more times. I was then hooked.

I don't remember what happened, now that I look back. Apparantly, Giant Dipper was one of my first roller coasters ever, don't remember a thing about it. All this time I thought it was Canyon Blaster @ Adventure Dome, ohwell, guess I've been a fanatic for life. There was a dead period though, where I liked it, I just wasn't obsessed with it, then RCT 2 came out, and I found weeweeslap because of it, and then I became obsessed with it again.
