2005 WWS/CC.COM Match-up Contest (Round 1)

Welcome to Round One of the 2005 NoLimits Match-up Contest. This round will test your terrained building skills, and I expect to see some awesome coasters that cascade down the hillside and pick up insane speed. The best design from each group will advance to round 2, where there will be a new template and set of rules. Good Luck to All!

DOWNLOAD THE TEMPLATE HERE:
http://www.weeweeslap.com/users/cjd/Round_1_Contest_Template.nltrack

THE RULES:

Your job in this round is to build a terrained floorless steel coaster. There are virtually no limits to what you can build in this round, but keep in mind that points will mainly be judged on pacing, creativity, and inventive use of the terrian. You will not get alot of points for building a flat coaster on the lake... let's see some constant speed and drops off the hillside. The better you pace the ride and use the terrain, the better your score. Small bonuses are available for 3ds and inventive support work. Here are the official guidelines:

  • Track Style must be Floorless Twisted Steel Coaster
  • Must contain at least 5 inversions
  • One of the inversions must be before the lift hill / launch
  • Only one lift hill or launch can be used
  • Must run with at least 2 trains smoothly - points off for stalling and low capacity
  • Each train must contain between 7 and 9 cars
  • Terrain cannot be modified except to build trenches and tunnels
  • The station can be placed anywhere on the template
  • No official height or length restrictions, but keep it realistic
  • Extra points are available for 3ds, good supports, and inventive use of the terrain
  • All tracks must be submitted by 11:59:59pm EST Wednesday, April 20
  • Send finished tracks to cjd@muskingum.edu, or post them on the exchange and post a link in this topic
  • Once a design is posted on the exchange, it is accepted as your final design. If you send a track through e-mail, you may re-submit as often as you like.

Questions & Answers

If you have any questions you can post them in this topic. I will try to answer your question A.S.A.P. Your question and the answer will be posted under this header.

Q: Can I use NL tools to make the track?
A: Yes. All tools are allowed. Coasters will mostly be judged on pacing and originality, so tools will not be a big deal.

Q: Can I submit a track ahead of the deadline?
A: Yes. You can submit tracks any time between the start and end dates of each round.

Q: Can I submit more than one version of a track?
A: Yes. As long as it is sent through e-mail, you can re-submit as often as you like. If you post on the exchange, however, only one submission is allowed.

Q: Can we add/remove trees?
A: Yes, you can add or remove as many trees as you want.

Q: Can we use more than one station?
A: Yes, you can use as many stations as you want. Just remember; smooth operation, and only one lift hill / launch.

Q: Will points be taken off if we use more than 8 inversions?
A: No, you can use as many inversions as you want as long as the coaster keeps its pacing up.

Question.

If we're in a group of three, how does that work exactly? Does the lowest score get elimated, or does the winner have to beat BOTH of the other two?

The winner out of the three members moves on, the other 2 are eliminated. After this round, all of the matches will be head-to-head until the finals, which will be the top four.

Not to complain, but that would seem to give those in the groups of 2 a signifigant advantage.

If we can't have uneven groups, then exactly how do you expect me to make brackets with 44 people? There is simply no way. Besides, a little extra competition never hurt anyone. After this round, all of the matches will be even. I am sorry to anyone who is offended by the "unfair advantage", but there is no other way to do it. I gurantee the competition will be just as heated in the 1 on 1 battles as the 1 on 1 on 1's. Just build like crazy. If it is a good track, it doesn't really matter how many other members you are up against.

cjd: Well, one idea would be to treat the first round as a qualifier, and take the top 32 scores overall into brakets.

i know that question isnt directed to me, but seriously, why do you care that you are one of the 35 people who have to face 2 people, instead of one? and quiet frankly, if you are in a group of three, and you cant beat both of them, you shouldnt get to the second round.

scenorio: you face one other person in the first round. your track is a 6, you beat your opponent, who had a 5 for a track. do really think that you deserve to even go into the second round? no, you dont.
the idea though for brackets, while slightly flawed, is a good idea. but instead of 32, 16 would work better b/c 1/3 of the field of 32 would either submit in junk, if they even submit something in.

PS: cjd, how many stations are allowed?

One question, the terrain cannot be modified except for making tunnels or trenchs. One's defintion of a trench may differ from anothers, so I think that you should not allow the editing of terrain. Its just kind of a wishy-washy rule.
