welllll... i guess... i suppose there's good and bad ones no matter how they're built, no scratch that.. you're right, there's good, and gooder.

... absolutely, this is something those of us who have jobs and stuff do for relaxation ... some people can relax and enjoy themselves by using tools to build the coaster others have more fun building freehand in the editor.....i'm one of the latter, math and numbers just aren't my thing, but i sure wish i knew how to use that heartliner thing, the other day i accidently built the worlds first multi inversion suspended wooden rollercoaster.....[|)]

Hey, Im no good with math and numbers either. Its about utilizing your tools to their fullest potential. Ive said it a million times: You dont have to be a math professor to get alot out of these things.

Here's a question that is kind of on-topic...

How many of you who download tracks actually go into the editor to see how the track was built? Personally, I rarely ever do. For me, enjoying the ride (or not) is the only thing that is important. I know some of you have your own reasons for getting enjoyment out of NL, and i'm not saying that you shouldn't check out the ride in the editor...if that's what you enjoy doing. Just stating my reasons for enjoyment, and am interested in how many of you feel the same way.

Hey Kev -- GREAT discussion question!!

When I rate, I rate SOLELY on the simulator experience. I do go into the Editor and look at how things were built (and ride in the Editor as well), but not until AFTER the rate has been completed. My rating procedures are on my website:

I will ride in the Editor if I really need to confirm an issue for a rate -- but 99 times out of 100 my first observation from the sim is correct.

the only time I go into the editor is when I am judging contest tracks. This is needed to check if the coaster is within the boundaries and give advice on making the coaster smoother. It's usually pretty obvious is Elementary was used, though. Nobody that builds by hand (not even me or Phyter) can achieve the same level of perfection. A couple of designers are geting close, but it's still obvious. Of course, I do use math in my designs, just not the pre-done math from Elementary. I go into my designs with a good old fashioned pen, paper, and calculator.

I think that the way the coaster was built is'nt that important for rating, even though I still do it. Usually I can tell where the vertices are from the simulator anywa - even if the track is very smooth.

yes, but also using them to one's own potential, i just tend to get frustrated when i try to use the tools, and frustration=not fun.... but i'm learning, i'm 34 and thanks to no limits i finaly understand the concept of a parabola, but still got a "d" in intermediate algebra last semester, the time i have spent learning these tools actually helps my math skills somewhat, and though i still think math is the most dogmatic of all acedemic subjects(i prefer literature and art)it's practical value is becoming more evident to me...

Handbuilt tracks can be just as good as tools built tracks... handbuilts just take 100X+ more time... ... ... and now ive switched over to mac leaving Newton and FVDs and AHG on my old computer... :P back to where i started from 2 years ago. (ps. does anyone kno where i can get Mac tools similar to FVD and NEwton?) jw

I also take a look at the track before I sim it, unless it's a trackpackage, in which case I just sim it then take a look.

I think tools like the AHG or the autoflanger really helps you, but they can't make a track ebtter than the builder is. That's why i don't really like the track smoother...so almost everyone can create a smooth track

Anyways i think it depends on a few things. First, tools take skill. If you look at some FVDed coasters (including possibly some of my firsts)they are crap. Good tool use is actually very difficult to do so if its well done, then tools are better. Heres a list of my opinions-

B&M- any Tools
Intamin- any Tools
GCI- Hand/AHG no more than .5 t most
CCI- Hand/possibly AHG
Gerstlauer- any Tools
PTC- Hand only
Herschell- Hand only
Vekoma- Tools/AHG no more than .5
Arrow- Hand/AHG no more than .5
Maurer- Tools
Older wood coasters- all Hand
Schwarzkopf- Hand/AHG no more than .5
