2005 WWS/CC.COM Match-up Contest (Round 3)

Welcome to Round Three of the 2005 NoLimits Match-up Contest. It's time to see if you can build a dive machine better than B&M can. In this round, you will be building a vertical drop coaster with whatever intense elements you can throw into 4000 ft of track. The best design from each group will advance to the finals, where they will duke it out in an all out coaster building slam fest with a platinum medal and 10,000 slappin' points on the line. The 4 losing designers will each recieve 100 points as a prize for finishing in the top 8. Good Luck to All!

THE RULES:

Everyone knows about the controversial Vertical Drop Coasters like Oblivion. Most of them are one-trick ponies that drop you really steep really fast and then just end. Well, it's your job to take a limited amount of track and turn it into a dive machine to remember. Try to keep the intensity of the drop going throughout the entire track, and really give your guests a thrill without going over the park's budget. The primary judging factors will be adrenaline and originality. Make an intense coaster, and do it in an original way. Bonus points are available for 3ds work and inventive coaster work in general.

  • Track Style must be "Floorless Twisted Steel Coaster"
  • Track must contain at least one drop of exactly 90 degrees
  • The coaster must be between 200 and 250 feet tall. (between 61 and 76 meters)
  • Only one lift hill can be used
  • No launches are allowed
  • The total length of the track must be less than 4000 feet (1219 meters).
  • The trains must contain either 2 or 3 cars.
  • The terrain can be lowered any amount for track tunnels and trenches, but otherwise can only be raised or lowered 20 feet (6 meters)
  • The coaster track must stay completely inside the boundary. Supports, station buildings, and 3ds are allowed to extend beyond the boundary, however.
  • The station can be moved to anywhere on the template
  • Extra points are available for 3ds, good supports, and inventive track layouts
  • All tracks must be submitted by 11:59:59pm EST Wednesday, May 18
  • Send finished tracks to cjd@muskingum.edu or post them on the exchange and post a link in this topic
  • Once a design is posted on the exchange, it is accepted as your final design. If you send a track through e-mail, you may re-submit as often as you like.

Questions & Answers

If you have any questions you can post them in this topic. I will try to answer your question A.S.A.P. Your question and the answer will be posted under this header.

Q: Can I use NL tools to make the track?
A: Yes. All tools are allowed.

Q: Can I submit a track ahead of the deadline?
A: Yes. You can submit tracks any time between the start and end dates of each round.

Q: Can I submit more than one version of a track?
A: Yes. As long as it is sent through e-mail, you can re-submit as often as you like. If you post on the exchange, however, only one submission is allowed.

Q: Can I get help constructing my coaster?
A: No. This must be completely your work.

Q: How many trains can we use?
A: You can use as many trains as you want, but there have to be more than 2.

It doesn't matter. Between 30 and 50 is the most realistic, but with the cable lift anything is possible.

That's the same thing as a cable lift, unless you mean the thing that Vekoma invented...

Does the drop need to SUSTAIN 90 degrees, or can it get steeper?

Quote: "Track must contain at least one drop of exactly 90 degrees"

This means that the angle of descent of one of the drops must be 90 degrees, no more no less. You can do anything you want with the other drops, though.

"The coaster must be between 200 and 250 feet tall. (between 61 and 76 meters)"

Is that the height above 0.0 or above the actual terrain?

Buster.

PS: Tyler, 90????????? is the steepest you can go. 95????????? actually ain't steeper. ;p

hey cjd,

would this drop be fine?

http://nldc.interfix.net/i3042

I can't make it better and i'm asking because I don't want to get my butt kicked out this round because of such a stupid little mistake.

Hmm just read the contest, yay, im excited, although this will be me last coaster in the contest as i am against tyler. Off i go to make Oblivions sister [:D]

EDIT: can we use as many transport sections as we like throughout the whole entire ride??????? Because i wanted to give that intimidating slow feel to my Dive machine which requires things like this[?]

I would try to keep the slammer down and make the drop more gradual and flowing - this should provide more air.

do you mean more like this?

hmm, if that would be fine...no problem but I don't know if that counts as the 90????????? drop the coaster must have.

question to you cjd[;)]

If the drop is at least 90 degrees at some point in the drop it should be fine. No coaster can have a drop 90 degrees all the way, the track must become parallel to the ground at some point. It looks smoother, but I can't tell unless I actually ride it - which I cannot because this is for the contest.

Ish, that looks fine, it looks the same as my drop although mine takes a little longer to get to vertical to give more floater air. [:D]

I'm going to be generous with the vertical drops. If the drop is off by a couple of degrees for smoothness purposes, I'll count it as 90 degrees. Just don't push it.

About the transport segments... you can use them as long as they don't increase the speed of the train.
