Have any of you guys ever watched "While you were out" on TLC? It's one of those home makeover shows, where people go to houses while the owners are away and fix them up. I was thinking that it would be cool to have a contest that was loosely based on this. The staff could pick a coaster from the exchange that has a lot of room for improvement, and start a contest to see who could fix it up the best. Not really sure what type of rules would apply here...I guess you would prolly need to clarify that the coaster could not just be completely bulldozed and rebuilt from scratch. Anyways, rules are something the staff would sort out if they decide they like the idea.

Just an idea. What do you guys think?

That sounds okay, but it would be hard to have much originality if we have 40 people building a coaster with basically the same layout... this is an okay idea, but we would need to find a way to get more originality involved before running it as an actual contest.

Yeah, it would be a little different than any other contest we've seen before. It would be cool though to see how everybody goes about improving what is given to them, instead of just building a coaster based totally on their own ideas. Personally, i've always found it harder trying to help somebody with their track compared to just building my own, so it would be very challenging.

I love the idea, but how would you tell if someone rebuilt the ride from scratch or not?

Good question...I don't know. [lol] Surely there's got to be some way of doing this though.

edit: I guess that it would be unreasonable to say that portions of the ride couldn't be rebuilt. Some coasters uploaded need more help than simply moving nodes around, so I don't know what rules would apply to this. Any ideas?

For originality, contestants could add theming and such.

I think originality should be rated like on recreations -- accuracy. Meaning the closest track to the original gets higher originality points.

Man, judging would be a nightmare if everyone has the same track layout, though.

How about this.

Inspired by my post in this thread: http://coastercrazy.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=8257

How about a contest in which forces must not exceed 3g vertical.

we could also have only a limited amount of spots (first come first server kinda thing) so its not too hard to judge.
Or you could have multiple judges, split each thing into sections, each judge pics the top 2 or 3 in thier brackets, judges share, and make final decisions.[approve]

Intersting idea - if NL allowed having more than one "broken" sections in a track, you could make a track with pieces of track missing and the goal of the competitor would be to fill in the missing track with their own designs. That way all tracks would be similar - but different. Get what I mean? Kinda hard to explain, but could be interseting.

You could give people premade (but good) elements to work with and they have to incorporate as many as they can.

or make a 3ds tunnel with a rad. of 10 meters round the original track, then, delete the track and the coaster contestands need to build must be inside that tunnel

Maybe this time we can concentrate our "judge"on the work on supports, colour of the track.I saw on a French site simple creations with supports and colours to remain astonished....If I find it I put the link!

The only problem I have with this contest is that it seems like more of a battle of technical and scenery. I mean, it's obvious who would likely win... the newbies who don't know how to build smooth coasters or make 3ds yet would basically have no chance. In most contests, the real conflict is over making the most exciting coaster. This contest is a decent idea, but we just need to find an effective way to make it work in more originality and adrenaline. My best guess would be that we could make a very narrow template that follows the layout of the track, giving very little room for much different stuff, and then set restrictions on the height, length, number of inversions, and such. Hmm... this might work after all. I will look for an appropriate coaster, and see if this strategy works.

EDIT: Okay, here's the scoop. I downloaded a mediocre coastrer, and the idea of using a small boundary allowed for some originality and adrenaline to kick in to the idea. This contest is on. It will not run until the RCT3 contest is over, but it has been verified. Basically, you will have a very narrow template to work with, that follows the layout of the coaster that is chosen with about 15 ft on either side. Everyone will have to use the same height, length, and basic sequence, and the best track will win. Questions? Comments? Suggestions? Let me know.
