Construction on Thorpe Parks new 'icon' coaster is underway. The coaster will be 200ft+ and will shoot to speeds of over 80mph in 4 seconds!

It looks as if thorpe are keen to get this construction going quickly to stop it from being a rushed finish like it was with Rita at alton!

0-80mph in 4 seconds? is that it? [lol] thats pretty weak isn't it? Doesn't Xcelerator do the same speed in much less time? hmmmm, still though, looks like it'll be fun, first proper rocket coaster in England.

Xcel does 0-82 in 2.3 seconds and TTD is 0-120 in 4 seconds.

And certain others to 0-108 in 1.8 seconds.....pwnage. ;)

Anyways, I'm glad different types of coasters are making their way to England now, especially since I'm headed over there this summer. :)

This only has an average acceleration of .912g, I think Kingda Ka does something like 1.65

Oh man, why arent thorpe making a coaster with a better launch than that!!! Ritas launch is more powerful!

I thing that the launch is so powerless, in this way the it's very long, and they can put the camel back after the first drop!

Well we certainly don't have the facts wrong, cus look at the bottom picture at the top of the page, a sign, actually at Thorpe Park, with the stats on.

That would suck if it was only 80 mph in 4 seconds, although remember that the firm designs the coaster around the parks needs, perhaps the park didn't want a very intense launch. Still KK goes 128 mph in 3.5 seconds! Come on!

Yeah, but as with KK and i know Rita, all the accelerating comes within the first second or two. The rest of the LIM is used to make sure the train is travelling at the correct speed, the trains should be up to full speed well before the end of the Luanch i.e Top Thrill Dragster, i beleive that gets up to 125mph before dropping back down to 121+mph to make it over the top

Dragster does reach 125 but it is near the end of the launch.

The thing is these trains lose speed quickly. 5 tons of mass traveling at 125 mph ON an upslope will lose speed like crazy. It loses speed even quicker at the top where even when it flies over (like its been doing this year more than normal), the last 50ft or so it seems to die. Its quite funny and perplexing but even last time I was there it was rocketing over the top (as fast as Ive seen the KK videos) it dies the last 50ft, its funny.

Launch wont suck. Geez. None of these hydraulic launches suck.

Why is it so weak. Do they have rules or something. Like at SFGAdv, they aren't allowed to excced 5G's. I know they made the launch longer because of the camel-back, but then they could have had a "2 Trained Station" like TTD. Or else one station were you load and one were you unload.

1 to 82 mph in 2.3 seconds in Xcelerator's case - it's just advertising. It may actually take longer for the train to get full speed as the parks always like to exxagerate these things.

Thorpe Park's ride should have about as powerful launch as the other rockets, they just advertise it with different numbers. :P

Actually, it takes SHORTER for these Intamin Hydraulics to reach their top speed. They normally do this for mechanical reasons plus its easier to regulate speed if you give yourself extra time to keep train at full speed.

Also, WHY are you all whining so much? What is wrong with 0-80 in under 4 seconds? What it wrong with an Intamin rocket coaster? I havent heard a single BAD review yet and weve seen a multiplex of designs now ranging from TTD to Xcel to Storm Runner to Rita and Kanonen. Find something else to complain about thats actually worth your time.

Lets talk about the ride.

And btw, that says 2006, not 2008.

well i think the problem with 0-80 in under 4 seconds is the the launch wont be as xtreme compared to xcelerator or dragster. But im glad there not going for the title of "fastes and tallest coaster in the world"

No cos the only English park that could actually go for that and get permission would be blackpool.

Real i think you're right. Its still an Intamin rocket and im sure it will be great. As you have said, no Intamin rocket has had a bad review yet. [:O][:D] This will still be a good ride. The launch is powerful enough. All Intamin rocket launches are good as Gouldy said [:D]

I cant wait to ride this though. [:D][:D][:D] The Intamin rockets along with B&M inverters are my favourite steel types at the moment, so i will enjoy it! [:D] And YAY, im riding rita again on thursday [:)]

you know jpe, I have a real urge to ride Rita again, I think I may be addicted to the launch feeling ... I keep telling my dad to accelerate away from traffic lights as fast as he can, he usually says no though, he does it when there is no one around, our car does 0-60 in about 5 seconds so its no where near as good as Rita. I may just go and ask my dad now if he can take me to Alton Towers this thrusday aswell [lol]

Anyway, to try and make this post pertainent, I had better say something about project Stealth [lol] ... so yeah, there was one question I had, do we know anything yet about how many trains this runs, or the capacity of the ride?

EDIT: 1000 posts!! yipee! [lol]

It doesn't luanch as fast as those rides, and the launch is one of the parts that makes the ride so great, it'll be like montazooma's revenge, fun the first second, but quickly wares off! The launch is about the same amount of g forces I think.

How many rockets have you ridden?

Also, itll be much more like 3 seconds, not 4. Why? TTD gets to 124ish in under 4 seconds, Ive timed it with a stopwatch on the ride as you can easily tell when it stops accelerating.
