Pay As You Drive!

I saw this on the news and was totally lost. The basic idea is a money per mile scheme, and according to the report i saw, main roads are more expensive than country roads (response to coasters4me)

I too agree that tax is necessary, but this isn't just tax, its a rip off. If i wanted to drive to and from school, on just one day, it would cost me about ?????????15. That's borderline robbery in my opinion, and thats on top of fuel.

I'm all for reducing congestion, but there has to be another way to help fix the problem. The fact of the matter is, most people need to drive at some point. Buses are not punctual, and are unreliable. A parent taking three kids to three different schools can't rely on buses, and most wouldn't be able to afford this new system.

The only place i went with tolls in Spain and its a pain in the ass. You always have to carry spare change with you and there is so many of them. If ever have to change roads you have to pay etc, man it sucks. Sadly, New York is the same way. The NY State Thruway is a pain in the tail -- and sadly I-90 or I-87 are really the only ways to get across the state with any kind of efficiency -- but God help you if you are on 87 going towards Albany, Buffalo, Syracuse, Rochester, or NY City on a Friday ... you had better pack a lunch.

^at least the tolls arn't that expensive in the usa. the only toll road in Canada is located in Toronto and to go from one end of the city to the other using the toll road can cost over 20 bucks depending on vehicle size and stuff :O

And your only other option from getting from one end to the other is using the worlds busiest freeway [xx(]

some things arn't even reach-able by bus. For example, my hometown has total 3 busstops. Ok, you can go by bus then but you still need to walk alot! Or what about if you missed the bus, then you need to take the car just for that short distance only to get you in time @ school or work! It's a way to trying to reduce the co????????? in the air, but what about people that have traveling as work? So they need to travel hundreds of miles on one day. They really need to get payed then just for that TAX on the car...
I'd say raise the earnings from work first and then come up with such idea. Since the euro came here the earnings from work got transformed into euro's and the prizes in the stores stay the same. So what was 5 guilders you can get now for 5 euro's! So prizes have doubled!

The netherlands is just f**ked up only because the politicals. Get rid of them. Give me some peeps that at least think about the ppl and not about themselfes!

NO WAY! would I ever go on hunger strike, I wouldn't last 5 hours, if I don't have my food, I get really jumpy and angry and the slightest thing can make me real angry I eat food pretty much constantly, the longest I'll go in a day when I'm not asleep will be about 2 and a half hours without food, after that I get bad to be around

Well, everything over where you are is inflated, correct? You mentioned the absurd gas prices you guys pay, so it seems to be right on par right? Im not saying its right (the price) but its not like you pay nothing for gas and a ton on tolls, at least its all congruent.

They are looking long term though. Most of you arent looking long term, just "How does it affect me now".

I don't think you are realizing how different this tax is from other taxes. I mean, this isn't like a you owe this much to the government so we can fix your roads, its a first you have to buy your $20,000 car, then you have to buy the gas to make your car go, and now you have to pay to use your car. Wtf? Next they'll be taxing you on how often you take a crap.

You must not have a very good idea what taxes are. Its not any different from sales tax, income tax or anything like that. A toll road is a STATE owned road. Hence, they have the right to charge a toll to use it. And because they own it, they maintain it and govern it. Theres nothing different about it. I dont want to pick on your age, but you will learn this with time. Especially if you ever have to use toll roads and pay for them yourself. Im HAPPY that I have that toll road to use because most toll roads are the absolute quickest ways around - but you have to pay.

And frankly, most of the toll roads (most, not all) in the US are reasonably priced so its well worth it because you save time driving - which saves on gas, but that extra money you would spend on gas goes towards tolls. And me, Id much rather get where Im going faster, with less gas and pay the same amount.


So, its no different. At least in the states. I wouldnt like being taxed to drive on non-state owned roads, however, if it meant quicker traveling and less traffic jams, thats LESS gas you use which means you save money so it COULD balance out.

Personally, I think it is actually funny to see folks who are not old enough to drive (let alone own their own car) speculating about why we need road taxes.

Ontario's biggest mistake ever. Not only is the toll road here in Toronto not a provincial owned road, it is owned by some foriegn company!!

many toll roads here in Cali have cams and stuff to see if you have the quickpass ( prepaid toll card ) but I've found out that most of the cameras are dummy cams and you can get through just fine without going through the slow poke pay the person lane and zoom by without paying or getting a ticket. Although don't try running through them now, I am just commenting on the many ones I've zoomed through, most on accident and later repeated them
