I know this is a coaster site...but we have an off topic board for a reason. So I decided to talk a bit about something that exists very much in our world today.
I am an American-born Asian and I have lived in the US for my whole life. When I first meet somebody, they ask, "How can you speak English so good?" Well, first of all, I was born here. Second of all, it's "well", not "good". Seriously, you'd think people who live here should know their English by now.
Okay - so I'm Asian. Here are a few main stereotypes that I have to deal with constantly:
- Cheap
- Nerd
- No social life
- Good at music
- Good at math
- Can hack an iPhone with no effort whatsoever
These are actually among the kindest of the Asian stereotypes. When one gets into the nether region of the human body, Asians have it bad as well.
OK. Let's assume that yes, indeed, I am cheap. Well, that's good, because I will end up in far less debt than people who care more about what something's worth than the quality of it. And what the hell is wrong with being a nerd? We're all coaster nerds here...who cares if someone's a music nerd or school nerd? Why do we look down on people who are intelligent?
No social life. Hmm. Well, having a social life in today's society usually is synonymous with drinking, doing drugs, and partying all night. So if I have no social life and you do...well, I'm probably more responsible and have more self-control over myself than you do.
You probably get my track by now. And I'm sure that you're sick and tired of me talking. Yes, I'm a geek. No, I'm not "cool". Especially since to be "cool" these days, you've got to be ignorant, stupid, unaware of the happenings of the world, and you can't, under any circumstances, read a frickin' newspaper.
Sometimes I really hate the world we live in. What do you guys think? Besides the fact that I have way too much time and am a loser and a geek.
