i was at guide to the point and came across the topic of top thril dragsters cable snapping, it is said that the ride should be open maybe later today or even tomorrow, this is not from cp officials or whatever but i beilive this is fairly accurate. by the way the cable is the thing that attaches to the trains and pulls it to 120 mph, some people on the midway and in the que line said that there was a really loud bang and the train jumped, no one was injured, i dont have all the info but check www.virtualmidway.com or www.quidetothepoint.com

A cable snapping on dragster was bound to happen sometime.
But not this soon...

You have to remember, that's a TON of stress for one cable...we all could see it coming, and so could CP. I don't think it's anything out of the ordinary for it to happen.

If the cables are really so delicate (yeah, right, delicate - like *I* could pull a ton up to 120mph) then why don't they:

a) Make the cable thicker
b) Make it from a stronger material
or
c) Use two or three cables instead of one, to disperse the load

Or am I completely missing the point here?

Yeah, I was joking. I always comment like that when something goes wrong within a few days (or in TTD's case, weeks).

Aterlatus:

a) More money, weight, looks bulky, and that might not hold it.
b) WAY more money, how much stronger do you want to get? If it too strong, it won't pull fast enough.
c) Requires more area to store wound cables, more money, harder to unwind, takes more time.

I am just taking every possible negative answer I can think of to help you. I do agree with what you say though [:)]

Well :P to you

;)

All depends on how often this cable might break though. What's gonna be more expensive? 1 (say) 6 inch diameter cable once a year, or several 2 inch diameter cables each year?

Then, of course, you've got the downtime. Not sure what that's like in your line of work, but where I come from downtime costs more money than anything, both in loss of earnings, paying employees for doing nothing and through repairing the error that caused the downtime in the first place...

wouldn't it be really scary if u were on the ride, and the cable snapped halfway up, u'd not make it to the top of the ridew, and come crashing down back throught the track, two things could happen, both dedly, one when coming back down the wheels get tangled up with the cable, throwning u off the track and plumeting down into the ground, or u'd continue on the track, past the station where the brakes couldn't stop u , and hit the train behind!!! BOOM!!!! scary thought!

i'm sure that cp when designing ttd they made sure that the cable could not wrap around the tires, and how would the train come off the tracks?? the three wheel design would hold them on!!

You Need to scrap the whole cable idea and replace it with some good old LIMs

yeah which would cost CP another 10 - 20 million $'s wouldnt you rather see anoth grade A coaster than give TTD a LIM, also im sure the electricity used would be far greater. The people who designed this ride werent stupid, and worked out every minute detail better than we ever could, its just prototypes can go wrong, hence the name prototype

Friction wheels???? you want friction wheels spinning at 120mph??? that would cost way more than the LIMs to use, and a chain wouldn't have enough give in it, it would snap on the first or second run.
