You asked a general question of a room full of musicians .... puh-lease. Either way I would have known, his cymbal setup gives it away almost immediately, as does his three tom set-up. Not many go with that kind of style ... so :p

I saw them last year about a week before Christmas. His setup didn't look that big from where I was sitting.

Anyone else notice that he uses a double pedal and not his left bass drum? Weird... [:p]

It seems like there's been a few threads like this over the years...lol

Personally, I've played piano for 11 years, mostly as a hobby. I play in about three different jazz groups.

I also play all low brass instruments, with a focus on euphonium, which I picked up about 7 years ago. I am about to go on tour with the Glassmen drum and bugle corps. For those of you who don't know, drum corps is sort of like professional marching band, and my corps is a Division I Top-12 group. It's a lot of fun (by fun I mean pain).

yea I'm missing the screws right now. they're taped on and in that pic, hence the lopsidedness.

Another question about the heads. Is it typical and/or better to match the heads (type, not tone) on each drum? IE, if I get one pinstripe head, should the other head be a pinstripe also?

It's mostly a family band with drums, bass, electric guitar, acoustic (sp?), and fiddle. We mostly do bluegrass and older country, but we've gotten distortion on my fiddle. Stand by Your Man has a whole new aura! [devilish]

Smer -- for appearance sake matching the heads is desired. However, it is all about the sound you are seeking. What you need to do is experiment on your OWN sound, and find that balance your "inner ear" is looking for. Once you have that, the type of head will no longer matter.

However, be careful when you have mis-matched heads all over the place (tops, bottoms, etc.) I would avoid any kind of pinstripe or "dot" head (or even colored head) on the bottom of anything, mainly because it REALLY hoses the tone of things (try it and see for yourself). If you even use bottom heads, the standard clear, Remo bottom (non-batter) heads are best -- and this applies to your bass as well. Get one with the hole already cut in it for mics (that looks SO much better than doing it yourself) and you should be set. Hopefully, this helps ya man.

ahh..drums have their place, but ... i feel like most of the time if you need that many drums your music or your audience isn't that interesting. moe tucker from the velvet underground is perhaps my favorite drummer, keeping drums to a minimum keeps the focus on the music. often she would simply stand her kick on it's side and play with soft mallets, most of the time not changing the beat for the entirety of often loooong pieces of music. the drummers from such groups as CAN and NEU also impressed me because they were able to resist the temtation to clutter up the music with beats...
on the other hand i cannot discredit drummers like ginger baker and keith moon, but i cannot stand "beats per second" type drummers who are more like jocks than musicians, which is most likely the reason groups go through drummers so quickly..don't take an obsessed,
music snob like me too seriously though, i'm more of an avant garde outsider type composer, and while i have a dozen keyboards and as many guitars and pedals and effects and plenty of unique sound makers to work with i'm usually satisfied with as little as a tambourine to keep rythm, and most of the time tempo and rythm in my own work is a result of modulation and/or conflicting modulations of different frequencies. interesting and loose impresses me more than intense and generic....byut i do understand that without the predictability and structure of a prominent drumbeat many people lose interest really fast.. different strokes for diffent folks i guess.

After Quasimodo's death, the bishop of the cathedral of Notre Dame sent word through the streets of Paris that a new bellringer was needed. The bishop decided that he would conduct the interviews personally and went up into the belfry to begin the screening process. After observing several applicants demonstrate their skills, he decided to call it a day when a lone, armless man approached him and announced that he was there to apply for the bellringers job. The bishop was incredulous.
"You have no arms!"

"No matter," said the man, "observe!" He then began striking the bells with his face, producing a beautiful melody on the carillon. The bishop listened in astonishment, convinced that he had finally found a suitable replacement for Quasimodo. Suddenly, rushing forward to strike a bell, the armless man tripped, and plunged headlong out of the belfry window to his death in the street below. The stunned bishop rushed to his side.

When he reached the street, a crowd had gathered around the fallen figure, drawn by the beautiful music they had heard only moments before.

As they silently parted to let the bishop through, one of them asked, "Bishop, who was this man?"

"I don't know his name," the bishop sadly replied, "but his face rings a bell."

The following day, despite the sadness that weighed heavily on his heart due to the unfortunate death of the armless campanologist (now there's a trivia question for you), the bishop continued his interviews for the bellringer of Notre Dame. The first man to approach him said, "Your excellency, I am the brother of the poor, armless wretch that fell to his death from this very belfry yesterday. I pray that you honor his life by allowing me to replace him in this duty." The bishop agreed to give the man an audition, and as the armless man's brother stooped to pick up a mallet to strike the first bell, he groaned, clutched at his chest and died on the spot. Two monks, hearing the bishop's cries of grief at this second tragedy, rushed up the stairs to his side.

"What has happened?" the first breathlessly asked, "Who is this man?"

"I don't know his name," sighed the distraught bishop, "but he's a dead ringer for his brother."

He found the people there trying to figure out as many decimal places of pi that they could. He shut the door and went to 80. He found the people in there talking about lastnight's Packer game. He thought to himself, "I'll come back to this one later," and shut the door. He walked all the way down to 16, and found the people in there talking about Sunday's episode of "King of the Hill." He shut the door, and went to door 7. He foung the people in there drooling on each other. Lastly, he went to door 3. One day a drummer sick of all of the "stupid drummer" jokes decided to change instruments. So he went to the local music store and said that he wanted to learn a new instrument. The store owner cheerfully replied ok and asked what he would be interested in playing. After looking around the shop he said I'll try those things over there, pointing to the accordion section.
After looking through the accordions from over an hour the shop keeper said, "Have you found what you looking for?"

The drummer replied, "Yes, I'll take that big red one over there."

The store keeper smiled and and stared laughing. When the drummer asked why he was laughing the store keeper replied, "Are you a drummer, son?"

"Yeah!" replied the drummer.

"Well that big red thing is a radiator"

A man goes to an exotic tropical island for a vacation. As the boat nears the island, he notices the constant sound of drumming coming from the island. As he gets off the boat, he asks the first native he sees how long the drumming will go on. The native casts about nervously and says "very bad when the drumming stops."
At the end of the day, the drumming is still going and is starting to get on his nerves. So, he asks another native when the drumming will stop. The native looks as if he's just been reminded of something very unpleasant. "Very bad when the drumming stops," he says, and hurries off.

After a couple of days with little sleep, our traveller is finally fed up, grabs the nearest native, slams him up against a tree, and shouts "What happens when the drumming stops?!!"

"Bass solo."

that was my favorite!!!!!!!!.. oh and the ginger jokes were o.k., bu i'm gonna substitute eric clapton in the 7-11 joke... he should just shut up and play his guitar..

All right, I can play Mitch Mithell's drums (He drummed for Jimi Hendrix).

And I took up guitar 5 days ago, and I can already play 30 seconds of Classical Gas, the entire Master Of Puppets intro, Enter Sandman riff, In A Gadda Da Vidda (minus the solo), Immigrant song, 007 theme, secret agent man, and lots more!!!

Next up to learn, Piano!

^um, dragon ... memorization and repitition of a few notes does not constitute an understanding of the instrument one is playing,or the art of making music with it, and even the memorization and repitition of thousands of notes certainly doesn't come close to showing anything closely resembling creativity...it might impress a bunch of teenage townies at a drunken bonfire, but hopefuly you'll get bored and develop something of your own.. unless being a clone is what you want... (LIKE THAT rev. c.?)
