Well, the first electrically powered coaster known was apparently Brownie Coaster at Kennywood from 1928.

As far as I know, the first modern "launched" coaster (in this case using LIMs) was Flight of Fear at Kings Island.

There are numerous different categories too. Swarzkopf holds the title for first electric cable launch, and Intamin holds the first Hydraulic launch.

yep, according to ultimaterollercoaster.com's timeline, Schwarzkopf's weight drop shuttle loop "King Kobra" at kings dominion was the 1st. The coaster was built in 1977 and closed in 1986 when it was moved.
