THE remains of a woman have been found sitting in front of her TV - 42 years after she was reported missing.
Hedviga Golik, who was born in 1924, had apparently made herself a cup of tea before sitting in her favourite armchair in front of her black and white television.
Croatian police said she was last seen by neighbours in 1966, when she would have been 42 years old.
Her neighbours thought she had moved out of her flat in the capital, Zagreb.
But she was found by police and bailiffs who had broken in to help the authorities establish who owned the flat.
A police spokesman said: "So far, we have no idea how it is possible that someone officially reported missing so long ago was not found before in the same apartment she used to live in.
"When officers went there, they said it was like stepping into a place frozen in time.
"The cup she had been drinking tea from was still on a table next to the chair she had been sitting in and the house was full of things no one had seen for decades. Nothing had been disturbed for decades, even though there were more than a few cobwebs in there."
Neighbours were shocked by the discovery.
Jadranka Markic was nine when Hedviga "vanished".
She said: "I still remember her. She was a quiet woman who kept herself to herself but was polite. We all thought that she had just moved out and gone to live with relatives."

That's just weird.

Biggest question: Who paid the bills?

Yeah, this just sounds made up.

Sigh ... I hate it when I have to actually explain things.

When you grow up and move out of mommy and daddy's house, you will realize that even when you use ZERO utilities, there IS still a monthly charge for your service. The same goes for water, garbage disposal, sewer, etc. If she had a tv, I assure you she had electricity, and even the Croatian government figured out this money making scheme by 1966 -- and if not, by 2008 I am sure someone had figured out how to make money off of every little person.

Considering it has been since 1966, you would think it odd that NO ONE ever called in a maintenance call, or any issue at all in this apartment. A run down building in Croatia (not too mention in war-torn Croatia)??? Yeah ... right.

And so I ask again, who paid the bills in all those years??

Lesson of the Day for the kiddies: If you think no one cares about you -- try missing a few payments and then see how quickly people come looking for you.

Well I figured you meant the TV bills since that's what you were talking about, and considering she was apparently 'missing' they obviously wouldn't try to contact someone they knew wasn't there.

Don't be such a degrading ass.

you think that the police, or anyone for that matter, contact the companies that supply services such as TConwell mentioned and tell them that someone is missing, or dead? My dad died more than 2 years ago now and even though we've done our best to make sure everything has been changed into my moms name, we still get some bills and letters come through that are addressed to him.

Usually, certainly in this country, if you didn't pay a bill, they would send you through a notification letter a week later, and subsequent notification letters for another 2 weeks, followed by a final demand threatening action, followed by bailiffs being sent round. This would certainly happen within a month, so how 42 years passed is beyond me!!

i think that this is made up, too much evidence to support that it didn't actually happen, i mean, surely if she was missing they would have searched her house perhaps for clues? oh well, shows how the Croatian government suck...

When dealing with one, it is natural to be one in return - especially so the message is completely understood. Apparently, it was.

[lol] @ Oscar, no thanks! With the new mortgage I am being a very "good boy". [lol]

Uhm, yeah, I have to confirm that this story wasn't made up... (I live in a neighbour country, you know...)
And, I think, they sent her letters and stuff, and when noone replied they simply cut off electricity and everything else... How does that sound, heh?
But, I still wonder how noone thought of looking in her apartment... That's strange...
And, Back than Croatia didn't exist, It was under the Yugoslavian kingdom.
And, yes they had TV back then! Proof: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:TV-i ... ld-map.svg

Oh, almost forgot:
Xpress, STFU, you've got no idea about Croatia. You can't just call a country the underside of the world, especially if most of the citizen are smarter than you are! Who do you think you are?

Most 13 yr old retards that pretend to know things about politics pick somewhere in the Middle East or Africa. You have somehow failed at this. Yes the Balkans have had their share of bad events and I congratulate you for passing 4th grade history when World War I is extensively studied and I congratulate you on advancing to the mighty fifth grade. Please ... think. You're incredibly isolated and sheltered.
