TAMPA, Fla. -
Police say a 20-year-old woman waiting to see New Year's fireworks at a Florida theme park was struck in the leg by a stray bullet fired from somewhere outside the park.
Police Lt. John Preyer says Kaitlyn Jacobs of Seminole felt a sudden pain in her lower left leg 10 minutes before midnight, apparently the victim of a shot fired in celebration elsewhere.
"She knew her leg was hurting but she didn't know why," he added.
WTSP reports the woman was sitting in the Gwazi Pavilion area when she was shot.
Jacobs was treated at a hospital and released.
Preyer says it's unclear exactly where the shot was fired from, but it was "definitely from outside the park."
Park officials didn't immediately respond to telephone messages seeking comment.
WTSP reports that police believe someone had fired into the air and the bullet inadvertently struck the victim. There were approximately 30 calls of fireworks/shots fired in the area between 11 p.m. and 12:20 a.m., according to WTSP.
