What are .rar files used for? I've seen this extension several times but didn't know what they're supposed to open with.

same as zip files, hmmm but you have to purchase rar I believe and most wont have it, I don't, had to purchase it for some stuff someone sent me and then it got deleted and can't be arsed to purchase it again. Dunno, depends if the majority wants it, input people?

If you have to purchase it, then I sure hope people aren't allowed to upload them in substitution for .zip, .nltrack, etc.

.rar and .zip are basicaly identical programs and are both free to use. I think .zip is the more universaly accepted. The problem is that, .Winrar can open .rar and .zip files, but for the people who only have winzip, they can only download .zip files, and i'm pretty sure not everyone on the site will convert

Right. Rar does compress a little better than zip, but the difference is insignifigant unless you're talking 10MB+ files.

Does anyone know if Windows XP includes the ability to open .rar files without need for any programs?

No it doesnt, you need to download winrar to open .rar

well actually there are more options to do crap when you rar files but I dont know what they are. Also i go on another site where all they use is rar so im used to it.
