Just build what's inspiring to you, and most of the time it turns out nice
It's been a long time

I agree that you should just build what looks cool and what makes you happy to start. However, if you are asking where to begin to get the "basics" of track building, I would personally start with something like a simple out-and-back woodie to get a handle on everything. Not only is an out-and-back layout very straightforward while still leaving room for personal flourishes, but the wooden auto-supports really look pretty good IMO (especially just for the sake of finishing a coaster, and especially better than steel prefabs) and that way once you're done with the track, you just need to press a button for it to be basically done versus placing prefab steel supports or custom supporting.

I might also recommend a not-complicated recreation early on, if only so you can say "This is what I want the track to do, what do I have to do to accomplish that?"

Just my 2c.

Yep, as the others said, build what you are comfortable with.
