I know that there is certain formulas for elementary that are really useful when making woodies. Does anyone have a name or preferably a link?

I mainly use HSAK for wooden coasters. I wouldn't use the FVD formulas, because you probably want the layout to have some lateral g's.

Beyond HSAK (which I'll assume you have), Red's Soup is an excellent tool in the creation of woodies. Check out the "Elementary" link at this webpage, as it has most every formula you'll need:
