It's a logarithmic scale, so a 7.0, (a pretty big deal, which is why it's in the news), is three magnitudes stronger than a 4.0 in Ohio.

^Which means a 7 is 1000 times greater than a 4, each number is 10 times more powerful than the previous one.

The Haiti aftershock was a 6.1, making it 125.89 times more powerful than a 4
