I need advice to see of I should enclose the top the shaft? Or leave it open.

use 3ds instead of wood supports, or, if you do use wood supports, make it look good and actually have a seamless floor.

Enclose it and make it dark. Use 3ds for smoke and darkness and throw in a steep drop to catch riders by surprise.

I've put pipes across the shaft, a air tank and pipes up the walls. I am working on a bunch of gears, pipes and what not on a big boxy thing.

If you want to make your pipes look realistic, add flanges to it, it'll really spice it up.
