Wow! there is a lot of stuff on this thread that I have a need to address so be prepared for a long post here.
I don't know where some of you have been getting your news and info from but, there has been no evidence or statements released about this guy trying to find his girlfriend because he was mad at her. By all witnesses account, the rampage was random and played out in a manner where the intent was to kill everyone in sight. There are accounts that, when he came passed people he had already shot and if they were showing signs of life, he shot them again. I would never defend anything that President Bush has done however, this man is not described as a terrorist because, he wasn't someone who was politically motivated to kill, injure, strike fear and disrupt. Not that that means it's fair to call all illegal immigrants potential terrorist by any means, I just wanted to differentiate.
A lot of you seem to feel that this kind of thing happens in other countries all the time, that's simply not true. Yes, unnecessary violence and death occurs in other countries as well as the U.S. daily however, the non-politically motivated, spree-style shootings do not happen anywhere near as frequently abroad as they do in the States. This is a direct result of America's idiotic lack of gun control laws. This man possessed his weapons legally and had no prior history for any gun retailer to think anything like this could happen. I completely agree that there is an extreme lack of caring when it comes to reports of violence in other countries whether war related or otherwise however, when it comes to the lives of innocent students, the world usually comes to an emotional concesus. As I personally have seen during recent events of students being held hostage and terrorist bombing schools. The people in my life were as affected by them as they are by this event.
I really think the finger pointing towards the university and police is miss-placed. When investigating a double homocide, it is not second nature to assume the assailant is going to go home to get more ammo and then go on a spree. By all accounts and evidence, the initial murders appeared isolated. The 2 people were shot in one room. it wasn't like the gunman had run throughout the dorm shooting. So in that case, the authorities were not required to call out the mass alarm. Even the mass e-mail could have potentially disruppted an investigation into a double homocide. The reason the university should be held somewhat responsible is, all of the recent evidence of how disturbed this man was before hand. And, if he lived on campus, which I don't know if he did, the fact that he possessed 2 guns and a ton of ammo on school property. I don't care how many legal permits a person has, no one should be allowed to openly or diceptively posses weapons on a school campus.
Finally, I read a lot of innapropriate things in these threads and have been guilty of posting them myself on occasion. It's just different people handling things in different ways which is simple human nature. The reasons I felt a need to respond like this are, I saw some inaccurate information posted and very little thought behind a lot of the posts.
My heart and condolences go out to the families of everyone involved. I lost my father on September 11th and therefore understand the shock and horror of losing someone in a violent manner at a time and place you had always assumed was safe. And, having to grieve while the whole world was talking about it, showing it on TV and jumping to all kinds of conclusions. I hope that there is less finger pointing this time around. Columbine, 9-11, The Amish school shootings, all terrorist and war activities have the very same basic root. Intolerence leads to anger, isolation, bitterness and ignorance. That's where the focus needs to be and not on who's to blame.
