they're just different resolution, and it depends on the screen size. If the screen is larger, definately the latter.

720 p is technically a higher resolution than 1080i.

They are basically equivalents of each other. 1080i is 1080 lines that are drawn 1,3,5,7... all the way to 1079. Then it draws the even lines. Progressive is when it draws all the lines 1,2,3,4... to 720. Because there are more lines for 1080i it looks the same as 720p.
