MOMBASA, Kenya ????????? An American ship captain was freed unharmed Sunday in a swift firefight that killed three of the four Somali pirates who had been holding him for days in a lifeboat off the coast of Africa, the ship's owner said.

A senior U.S. intelligence official said a pirate who had been involved in negotiations to free Capt. Richard Phillips but who was not on the lifeboat was in custody.

Phillips, 53, of Underhill, Vermont, was safely transported to a Navy warship nearby.

Maersk Line Limited President and CEO John Reinhart said in a news release that the U.S. government informed the company around 1:30 p.m. EDT Sunday that Phillips had been rescued. Reinhart said the company called Phillips' wife, Andrea, to tell her the news.

The U.S. official was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity. A Pentagon spokesman had no immediate comment.

Very odd that they missed one ... maybe there will be a sequel?

If you kill three of the four, your an idiot. Your just going to have the problem again as soon as the forth guy has other supporters. The rescuers are idiots!

Fourth is captured. He's not going to have supoprters come and help him out. They'll just be shot dead or captures as well.

pirates are dumb, they claim "we believe in dying for our land," and they are "fighting illegal fishing and dumping of toxic waste in Somali waters" yet they are taking aid supply ships, yahts, and other cargo ships in a 1.1 million square-mile danger zone, and demanding multi-million dollar ransoms to free the hostages and the ship they took.

I mean, does it makes sense to hijack a ship full of food that was going to be yours anyway?

I'm pretty sure they wouldn't know what's going to be on those freighters when they board them. They probably just have very crude radar (or none at all) on their mothership, find a large ship and then head out on their makeshift speedboats. I don't think they know if it's going to be aid for their people or more toxic waste being dumped in their shorelines beforehand.

Simple fix, give the cargo ship crew weapons to fight back...

It's symbolic. The western ships are who dumped toxic waste there (unless that's completely BS), so by targeting any western ships in their area they're trying to deter any more from coming.
