If your talking about the wood inbetween the rails, I believe it's there whenever there is track below it, incase of any falling objects or anything like that.

Just use free nodes and place them between the rails from where you want the wood to start and end, then connect with flat wooden beams. It's similar to making the roofs of wooden tunnels.

The wood covering in between the tracks is also used to make is easier to cross the track when the walkways on either side end.

Yea thats what I was gonna say. If you see in that picture you posted: The catwalk on the right side of the track is ending, and begining on the left side, so they use that so someone walking the tracks can switch sides.

The one on the lower sections is for crossing from the left catwalk to the right. You can see the left catwalk ends there.

The best example for what I said is Hades, just look at how the two hills have the wood over the same turn below:

From personal experience, in NL they merely add a nice sense of realism, but of course are not required. However, when I see them I'm always delighted to see that someone took the time to note the need and put them in, and hence adds to the overall score from me since the designer is paying attention to detail.
Sometimes the best thing to say is nothing at all.

^Like on "The Legend" at Holiday World... the last 2 turns are completely covered with the middle planks.
