Artemis (Round 4) by dcs221 is a track for NoLimits Coaster - CoasterCrazy.com

Artemis (Round 4)

by dcs221 · NoLimits Coaster · Oct 1st, 2006
Description
My 2006 WWS/CC.com NoLimits Tournament, 1st place Round 4 entry. Artemis, the "goddess of the wilderness," is a Gravity Group wooden roller coaster, featuring mindblowing pacing and deliciously substantial airtime. Enjoy the frenetic ride reminiscent of such greats as Hades and The Voyage, but with enough innovative twists and turns to make this experience totally unique.

Huge thanks to Persian Lombax, who designed and built the beautiful tunnels and cartexture you see in this track. He did a great job, especially considering time constraints. Thanks also to AbsentMindedDrmr for last minute supporting fixes...without him all riders would be dead from hitting support beams lol. Also thanks to those AIM buddies who tested throughout the process.

Any and all comments/rates are greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance to those who choose to help me out by rating. I always take every comment into consideration when making future rides, so if you'd like to see more cool stuff, let me know what you think of this! :)

Note- This version does not contain the extensive custom supportwork Woodie Man was constructing. He's very busy with school and other commitments, so we agreed it would be best to release this now, then possibly later release the version featuring his excellent supporting skills.

Lets just say I feel badly for your "competition" in this round.

Only flaw was that tree hit and the wacky MCBR.

EDIT: Well since I have just found out that The Voyage has a slightly unperfect and hill-like MCBR, I've decided that yours is perfectly fine.

But those few tree hits, eh not quite working for me :P

I want to ride this for real...What a rush! I put this on my projector and rode it on a 100 inch screen and I was blown away. I don't know if this would survive a long time in the real world without some serious supports but I would love to try it! Great artwork and the custom paint on the car. Loved the tunnels. Really great work!

I think my face just got blown off.

It was very clear to see what parts were inspired by which coaster and that was pretty cool! I highly doubt that anything like this madness will be built anytime soon. Ha.

The one thing I felt bittersweet about were the quick transitions. Some seemed almost to quick, giving a whiplash type feeling. Not all were, but there were one or two.

Any coaster that can maintain a 50mph average speed is always good in my books. =]

Great ride, looks deceiving from afar... a lot of hidden thrills mixed in with trees and tunnels.

T: Lateral spike (yellow) around some corners, but in real life I have been on a few jerkers that are probably worse than this. Trains finished the track after an estop, crawled over one of the highly banked turns, but the train did make it.

A: Non stop from the station and back. Really enjoyed the section of twisting track before the lift. Gives a nice little rush before the lift hill. Even after the estop the train, for the most part, picked the speed right back up for a great finish.

O: As others have mentioned, does remind me of voyage a bit, but with extra suprises all packed in.

Wow - this ride was phenomenal! It's pretty much my dream coaster: one huge long drop followed by low-to-the-ground absolute insanity! It might have been a little too intense to be made in real-life (it would tear itself apart in about a week!) but for the purposes of NoLimits, it was spot on. Fantastic job, man!

BT-basically perfect. There were only a few tiny oddities in the whole ride. The inversely banked turns were great. supports were good, but could use a bit more extra wide bracing.

A-exciting throughout. Great terrain and scenery interaction. Tunnels were awesome.

O-This reminded me of Voyage in the out and back section, but there were other elements that were completely insane.

Wow! What a great ride. I would stand in a 2 hr. line to ride it again and again! I love the quick start and then the long climb into an AMAZING first drop. The double surprise tunnels were a treat. Love the scenery, as I am a real naturalist coaster fanatic in real life. I love a good wooden that goes through a lot of trees and landscaping. Great steep banks and energy on this coaster. I'm not going to take off any points for not including the lateral bracing on some of the turns although if this coaster were real, it would need them. So I give you a 10 for Technical because I'm looking at the way you formed the track which was incredible (that's unbelievable down home neighbor). How you got that train around that small hill at the bottom of the first drop without the G's going into the red was, as I said before, unbelievable. Adrenaline was off the chart. Originality, very good with the terraforming and tunnels. With a custom station, you would get a 10 for originality.
A GREAT RIDE! Definitely going into my "keepers" folder.

WAHAHAHA! holy wow! that was amazing! probably the most thrilling ride in NL. WOW!

tech : there was one minor tree collision near the far end of the track, however, i know nl does twist the trees around in the simulator so i wont take off for that. the tree was a good distance from the track, but still very close.

adren: WOW.

I am sorry that it took me so long to rate this coaster, but I guess I just had to get over the shock of how well made this is. A truly inspiring masterwork for aspiring NL builders like me. I have much to learn and that is for sure. The track was smooth, the layout was incredible, and the theming and 3ds were first rate. If this isn't in the Cool Designs section then it should be. Great job!

Thanks for the comments. I'll offer some explanations...

-First, 3ds. I've never done any myself, don't have any program and truthfully, I prefer making the tracks and layouts over putting scenery together (not speaking of teraforming or adding trees etc.). I'd rather ask for help with rides that I make for myself, ie. those that I take forever to do and put weeks to months of hard work into, instead of asking someone to make a station for a track that I only worked on for a little over a week. Also, if I do ask for something, I'd like it to actually affect the experience, like a tunnel or similar scenery object would do. It's like, everyone complains about Nitro's corrugated steel station, with rust seeping from the ride name, yet it really doesn't make a difference because the ride itself is outstanding. Anyways, that's my reasoning for that.

-Supports would take forever on a ride this size, and I don't have the time nor will to do them. With my laptop it takes about 10 seconds for a node to highlight after clicking on it, and a similarly long time to do anything else related to supports. You're completely right that the ride needs more lateral supports...I'm just like, "forget that" though, because it'd take way too long. Woodieman was doing them, but then completely stopped mostly because of school, and I'm doing mechanical engineering so I have very little time (and what time I do have I'd rather not be doing something as monotonous as adding supports to a 200 foot-tall, 6000 foot long woodie). Truthfully, I don't think the supports will be done before the end of this school year, so that's why I wanted to go ahead and release something for people to see. This was not one of my premier projects like SROS SFNE, El Toro, or this one rocket coaster I have that not too many people have seen, all of which I'd never release prematurely, so I wasn't worried about it.

-About the speed at the end... the ride's something like 6300 feet long, and Voyage, a ride of similar length and intensity, is considered to be on the edge of being too long and intense, so I didn't want to draw out my ending. Doing so would both make the ride seem less realistic, and could just be too much for riders. You gave the example of a helix... IMO a helix wouldn't add anything to the experience. It's better to end with a lot of speed like SROS SFNE or MF, and have riders come off pumped. A more realistic solution would be to extend the brake run... because of the template, and very limited time (I was in a calc 2 class which started the second week of the competition, so I couldn't hardly get anything done), I wasn't able to lay out my track so that I could have more brake run. If it was one of my own tracks, that would not be a problem because I could just move the station, or take more time to make sure I had more than enough space left for brakes.

Thanks again though. I definately agree that the ride is by no means a 10, especially because of the supports, but I don't think a station should be a reason for that, especially since I already have tunnels thanks to persianlombax. Not speaking just to you, but having 3ds shouldn't be a requirement to have a really great ride in NL... maybe it could be more of the norm if some 3ds program was include within NL, but otherwise myself and others have no experience with these things, and I know I don't care that much to learn how to make 3ds for NL because that would be taking time I could use doing something I enjoy more. Anyways ttyl man

I am sorry man, but this is not a perfect 10. I have two words for you: LATERAL BRACING! This coaster has ZERO lateral bracing and thus, at the speeds you are moving out throughout those overbanked turns, the track will warp and eventually crack/fall down. I am not sure how no one below me saw this, but yeah man, you need to do a better job at supporting. Regardless of the decision to "release it" early, you honestly should have waited on account of that it just looks VERY unfinished. There is no way those thin little 1x1 tubes are going to support the whole track on those heavily banked turns. I was a little disappointed to see just the plain old station being used though. With all the work you did on the layout and tunnels, a custom station would have at least finished this off and given it a total, completed look. The tunnels are great ... but how about some other 3ds? Maybe something to give it look like it belongs in the landscape you have it? I don't know, but it seems way to barren here. Finally, your speeds. It is fast, but that is not my problem with it. I am disturbed by how much speed is actually wasted on this coaster as it hits the final brakes. Certainly you could have added in another helix, or something before the end to burn off some of that speed. The stop you have is way too abrupt and may eventually cause more injuries than give joy. Overall, a very decent submission though, congrats on getting a medal and I'm sorry I did not get to rate until now.

I just compared this directly to onslaught - and liked the latter way better. You wanna know why? Well, after riding onslaught (even for the first time), I basically remembered everything. I was all like, wow, that drop was great, and what about that transition over there, and so on. Artemis, on the other hand, left me without a real idea of the ride. It was certainly thrilling and way out of control, just what the contest wanted. But as it was so insane (just like Diavolezza, in a way), it had far less highlights than Onslaught. Also, I don't like these opposedly banked sections neither. I did like the single one on onslaught as a surprise, though. See? That's a good example for why I think that Artemis' layout is just too... thick. I ain't gonna drop a rate, though. I see I rated onslaught a 9.17, so it would be about BT 10 AD 8.5 O 7 here, but looking at the other raters, that would probably be unfair. However, of course, it was still a good woodie. You also had a great little prelift section this time. ;)

I'm practically speechless.......................AWESOME!!!! I've been waiting for the longest time for someone to do a track like this because GOD knows I can't. My 2 favorite woodies are Voyage and Hades and this has many features and elements that those have. Actually, this coatser really seems like a Gravity Group coaster. You had excellents speed, transitions and G's through out this entire ride with great banking and negative banking. It kept me wondering what was next around each hill and turn. You didn't use a ton of objects but just the landscape itself kept parts of the track hidden to keep parts of it unexpecting....... WONDERFUL, ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL!!!!! I CANNOT WAIT UNTIL YOUR NEXT GG LLC TYPE WOODY.

Whoa! This ride was insane. But there was one problem, their was barely any lateral bracing! Ahhhh! anyway, the speed was probably the best part. It seemed like the train kept the same speed trough the whole course. The airtime was great. I really liked the supports and the tunnels really added to the expeirience. Great ride, excellent.

- Great coaster. Really good elements and nice lay-out.
- It was fast! Adrenaline througout the wh?????????le ride. Nice!

A lot of good things are already said. Here's what I didn't like:
- Some parts were a bit too tight and pumpy.
- Some tunnels could have been a bit longer, or perhaps removed. (Like the tunnel on your screenshot).
- And... I know a lot of people like them, but I h?????????te those wrong-banked hills and turns... I'm sorry :)

But overall, of course, a very good coaster!

My third perfect 10 in the three years I have been haunting this site. As with Onslaught, this ride was just amazing from start to finish. The pacing was breath-taking and the ride was constantly inovative. The terrain interaction was thrilling and the trackwork was flawless. It was also completely original throughout. An absolutely perfect woodie if there ever was one. Not much more I can add, as everything was really done to perfection.

Sweet man! It's a lot crazier now with big trees than it was before. This thing was awesome.

T : First off, this thing, for the majority of the ride, was very well done, very realistic. You had little things like small leads, circle hills, correctly matched radii, etc. that few other elementary users seem to pick up on. It was truely a work of art.

Now there were some things that weren't perfect per se, but weren't major detractions.

First off, the bottom of the first drop into the turn. I know it is smooth, in terms of correctly matched factors, but it's just bad. This really is the main fault of that formula, the fact that it just doesn't go smoothly into the turn, it just jolts to the defined radius. Too bad there is no other publicly availible formula that does that (well, I guess you couldn't even consider this one "public"). Next, the end turn on that big string of Esses seemed to leadout a bit violently. Not very major though. Next, the last pop of air before the brakes. You go from 3.5 to -.8 in a very short time. Maybe a little too violent. Again, not that big. And the last thing I want to touch on is the supports, or lack thereof. They really would've added to the ride.

A : Yes! Madness in NoLimits form. So much of everything, airtime, lats, twisties! You even threw in original elements, on a woodie! Wow! Those tunnels were a great addition too. I loved the outward banked switchback, it was awesome, as was the 90????????? floater hill. Along with the flying through the trees, make this one truely insane ride.

This really didn't seem to have the monotonus feeling that a lot of the other NoLimits GG rides have. It really was mixed up well.

O : Very very very original. A layout like none of us have ever seen. Plenty of original things. Blah blah blah. You've heard it all before.

Work of art, yes!

Now's time for homework, thanks for making me delay. You just had to release this tonight [;)]

OH
MY
GOD!!!!

That was amazing!!!

BT- I have been waiting for this ride for soo long, and it was well worth the wait. The pacing is, simply, UNREAL. Its just soo fast, and it never seems to lose speed. There's just an incredible thing to say about someone when they can build like this. Some of the supports looked like they could use a little lateral bracing, but thats all I docked you for. This ride was Incredibly well built!

A- DEAR GOD, this was such a rush. Even for a sim it had me all excited going up the lift. I really cant say enough about this coaster other than that you have mastered the art of reverse banked hills. Especiall that fly-by the station, man the airtime just didnt end!

O- I can say without exxageration this is the best ride I've ever seen. EVER. There was just so much that was so well done and was soo amazing. I loved this, and its truly a ride all its own, because no other ride would be able to thrill that well.

Is it at all possible for me to take building lessons from you? :) Because after this, I have to master the art of DC-Fu.

Great Job with this, I LOVED it

Ride designers on here get better and better every day! This was quite possibly the best woodie ever! I've never met a wooden coaster that doesn't lose any of its speed until the final brake run. Excellent.

Dcs....you..are..a..coaster..god.

Incredible!! Never seen a track like it. It just FLEW through the track, giving the most out of control, crazily awesome wild feeling ever on No Limits!!! How do you do that!!! Ahh...alright, heres the rate.

T - Flawless except for one tiny little jerk that i didn't notice until the fourth or fifth time i rode it. So small, i didn't take any points off. Incredible...amazing..im in awe at this track. Wow. No problems here.

A - This was just relentless insanity!! It flew over the track, through the trees, underground, under and over itself, just ridiculous. Thrilling as hell. Perfect score here also. Oh..and i LOVED that dive into the forest at the beginning of the return trip. It was soooo sweet man...

O - Once again...perfect score. I was so surprised by that banked hill thingymambober, and then all the other elements you jammed in there. Unbelievable coaster!!!!!!!!

Overall, the best coaster i have ever ridden. Honestly, i think this deserves a perfect 10!! Congrats on winning the contest and making one of the craziest tracks EVER!!

Wow... this is stunning, smooth as Onslaught was, but a whole lot faster, and with a lot of terrain hugging parts.

Right of the station you get a jolt airtime, and a rush of speed into the lift hill, going up and seeing the drop left me thinking "holy crap", I have yet to see an 80 degree (ish) drop pulled off on a woodie, and it led right into a giant sweeping turn, beautiful. Double up with lots of airtime, dropping perfectly into the tunnel flowing to the next hill, leading into a twister section, one of my favorite parts of the ride, trees all over, providing head choppers and a real terrain woodie feel, I have looked over this part many times, and it stands out to me the most. After the twister section is a great hill then the mcbr, which didnt kill the adrenaline (thank god), dropping swiftly into the ground for a hill (I also noticed that there are two hoels in the tunnels that are not used, are they there for a reason?), coming out of the ground is a great turn, overly banked for lats, then rolling to the helix, which seemed a lot longer and bigger while riding but it was regular size with a really quick pace. The part after the helix that jumps into the lift supports then has a giant drop to a hill is marvelous, and right after, there is the hill near the station, I am guessing you used the purg to rotate the hill to get a reverse banking airtime hill which rocked! After the purg hill were several fast paced turns that were great, but not as great as the rest of the coaster.

T - Perfect, but it would be a kick in the ass to have to pay for this thing

A - More then Perfect, the whole time it seemed it was getting faster and faster.

O - A woodie over 65 meters that dosnt suck? Cant get more original then that, nearly every element stood out.

This is the second time I have handed out 10's, the first set of 10's was for Onslaught.

You have perfected woodies, I have not yet downloaded a steel coaster of your but I am sure they are great as well.
