As some of you may know, the server that powers coaster crazy has been faithfully churning away non-stop in an air conditioned data center for the last five years. As it is approaching the end of its service life, its well deserved retirement I have decided is soon forthcoming. With that being said, I am giving you some forewarning that coaster crazy will face some (hopefully short) downtime in the near future as we deploy a new server. I have not yet ordered the new server, however I expect to do so within the next two weeks. If everything goes as planned, the switch should happen towards the end of October.

Cheers,

Captain Mikey

So today I ordered the new server, here are the specs.

Intel Xeon Quad Core X3220 @ 2.4 Ghz(SL9UP)
8 Gb of DDR2 ECC 5300
2 x 250 GB SATA II HDD (Raid 0)
1 x 16 GB SSD

While this server shares the same processor speed specs, it I/O capability is twice as fast and it supports 64bit instructions. Which should hopefully help with our database transaction times.

Just a quick update:

I went to the local supply store today and tried to get the ram, but they didn't have any DDR2 5300 ECC in stock. The brand that they do normally carry was way outside the budget for this deployment anyway so no loss there. They did however have the SSD on sale, and so I got it for less then half the price. Tomorrow I am expecting the X3220 to be here.

Can you give notice as to when exactly you will be making the switch and be sure that the drafts are postponed during it if they are still going on?
Boulder Dash was the only good roller coaster.

No, I am going to rip the server out in the middle of the night and nobody will know anything about it until its all over.

/sarcasm

Yes, that is the point of this topic, to inform you on the status of the server build out and deployment schedule which is all tentativly set for late October.

All dates mentioned are dates that fans made up. [;)]

To add one more to the collection: 21 December 2012!
Yes, the world will end when NL2 is being released! [lol]

It was never mentioned if the world would end at the beginning of 2012 or the end.

That's believable. Everyone will stop mating for ever and humanity will never ever again reproduce and thus no more people will be born! yay!

So the new processor was installed and burned in today, I installed Server 2008 X64 on the SSD to run the bench mark software. Just to show you how outdated the server is, lets have a looky at the bench marks. I should also note that the test on the new server was with only 2Gb of ram, I am also aware of a issue with etier the SSD's speed or the primary SATA drive which is causeing it to operate at only 1/5 of its bandwidth. I will update the bench marks after this issue is fixed.
